6 Claude Code alternatives in 2026 (and how to keep Claude's models)

Claude Code is one of the best coding agents around, but it has some catches. It isn't on Claude's Free plan, so the cheapest way in is Pro at $20/mo ($17/mo billed annually). Usage resets on a rolling five-hour window with a weekly limit on top, and Claude chat, the desktop app and Claude Code all draw from that one pool. Max ($100 or $200/mo) is monthly only, and the API credits that come with Max and Team plans can't be spent in Claude Code. It also only runs Anthropic's models.

One gotcha if you stay: when an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable is set, Claude Code uses that key instead of your subscription, and you pay API rates.

Here are six alternatives, ranked.

1. GitHub Copilot: the best all-rounder

Copilot runs in VS Code and other editors, on GitHub, in a desktop app and in the terminal through Copilot CLI, which GitHub includes on every plan, Free included. Copilot CLI works with your issues and pull requests through GitHub's MCP integration, has a plan mode, and runs parallel subagents with /fleet.

Price: Free $0 (2,000 completions a month plus limited chat and agent use). Pro $10/mo includes Claude Sonnet 5.5. Claude Opus 5.5 and Fable need Pro+ ($39/mo) or Max ($100/mo). Business is $19 and Enterprise $39 per user/mo.

2. OpenAI Codex: closest like-for-like if you pay for ChatGPT

Codex is the same kind of agent, with an open-source CLI (Apache-2.0, about 130,000 GitHub stars), an IDE extension, cloud tasks, GitHub code review and Slack. It now lives in the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux.

Price: Free and Go ($8/mo) get light use in the desktop app (subject to rollout). Plus ($20/mo, same as Claude Pro) adds Codex on the web, CLI, IDE and iOS. Pro is $100, $200 or $500/mo. Business is $20/user/mo billed annually. Or run the CLI on an API key at API rates.

3. Cursor: an AI editor with the agent built in

Cursor is a VS Code-style editor with its own agent, cloud agents and a CLI. Free is $0 with limited agent and chat requests. Plus ($8/mo) only includes Grok models; Claude and other third-party models need Premium ($30/mo) or higher and bill at API list price. You don't have to choose, either: Claude Code's VS Code extension works inside Cursor.

4. Google Antigravity: the best free option from a big lab

Antigravity is an agent-first platform with an app, an IDE, extensions, an SDK and Antigravity CLI, a terminal agent that runs subagents in parallel. Google replaced Gemini CLI with Antigravity CLI for unpaid and Google One users on Jun 18, 2026, so this is now Google's free terminal agent.

Price: Individual $0 (basic weekly rate limits), Google AI Pro $19.99/mo (US), Ultra from $99.99/mo.

5. Cline: open source, and Claude on your own key

Cline (Apache-2.0, about 70,500 GitHub stars) runs in VS Code, in the terminal and as a desktop app. It edits across your project, runs commands, uses MCP servers and asks for approval at each step. It's free for individual developers: you pay only for inference, with your own API key or through Cline at cost.

6. Aider: the minimal terminal pair programmer

Aider is free and open source (Apache-2.0, about 49,600 stars). It edits files in your repo and commits each change to git, with almost any model on your own key, including Claude and local models. Development has slowed, though: the latest release is v0.86.2 (Feb 12, 2026).

Keep Claude's models, change the tool

Leaving Claude Code doesn't have to mean leaving Claude:

  • GitHub Copilot Pro ($10/mo) includes Claude Sonnet 5.5; Pro+ ($39/mo) adds Opus 5.5 and Fable.
  • Cursor bills Claude at API list price on Premium and up.
  • Cline, Aider and OpenCode run Claude on your own Anthropic API key. Sonnet 5.5 is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output.
  • Zed can run Claude Agent as an external agent with its own login and billing.

None of these use your Claude Pro or Max subscription. On a subscription, Claude Code is the way to spend it.

How to choose

  • Most for the least: GitHub Copilot. Copilot CLI is on the free plan, and Pro at $10/mo still gets you Claude Sonnet.
  • Already pay for ChatGPT: Codex, included from Free up.
  • Editor first, agent second: Cursor.
  • Free agentic IDE and terminal agent: Google Antigravity.
  • Open source, pay only for tokens: Cline, or Aider if you live in the terminal.
  • Happy with Claude Code but hitting limits: Max 5x ($100/mo) may be cheaper than switching.
