I genuinely thought for a while they might be the same company with two names, or that one was a rebrand of the other. Neither is true — they're two separate, unrelated companies. But they're run by different companies and work a bit differently underneath.

The practical difference that mattered to me: OpenRouter has some models you can try for free (with some usage limits), which was great for just poking around and seeing what this whole "AI API" thing even was before I decided if I wanted to spend any money on it.
