The only question is whether that means just the client-side code or the backend too. If X really open-sources the entire stack, this could set a historic precedent for commercial software.

Atleast the first time they do it willingly... Microsoft for instance with DOS source were rather hesitant. Would be interesting what licensing they release it with, might be able to gleam some ideas for Forem? Also imo, releasing the full source-code, would basically mean that they're trusting their security is nuclear bomb proof, let alone 'secure', if they're still patching, I highly doubt the secops lead would allow it to release anytime soon... You never truly patch every hole and open source means attackers have a blueprint.
