How to Use LM Studio From Your Android Phone in 2026 (Your Desktop AI in Your Pocket)

LM Studio does not have a mobile app. If you want to use the models running on your desktop from your Android phone, the official answer is: you cannot.

The unofficial answer used to be: set up a reverse proxy, configure your network, install a separate Ollama-compatible client app, and hope everything stays connected.

The actual answer now: Off Grid auto-discovers LM Studio on your network and lets you use it from your Android phone in about sixty seconds.

Remote Server Config

How to set it up

On your computer

Open LM Studio. Developer tab. Load a model. Start the server. Check "Serve on Local Network." Done.

If you are not sure which model to run, Qwen 3.5 9B is the recommendation for machines with 16GB+ RAM. It was released March 2026, outperforms OpenAI's GPT-OSS-120B on multiple benchmarks, and runs at 30-50 tokens per second on Apple Silicon. On a Windows PC with an NVIDIA GPU, it is even faster.

On your Android phone

Install Off Grid from GitHub Releases. Make sure your phone is on the same WiFi as your computer. Open Off Grid, go to Remote Models, tap Scan Network.

Off Grid finds your LM Studio server and shows you every loaded model. Tap one. Chat.

What you get that a web interface does not

There are web UIs you can point at LM Studio's server endpoint. But Off Grid is not a web wrapper. It is a full AI app that happens to also connect to your network.

Switch models mid-chat. Have multiple models loaded in LM Studio? Off Grid shows all of them. Switch between a fast 4B and a powerful 9B in the same conversation without losing context. Use a code model for technical questions and a general model for everything else, in the same thread.

Projects and RAG. Create a project, attach files - PDFs, code, CSVs, text - and Off Grid builds a knowledge base. When you ask questions, it searches your documents and passes relevant context to whatever model is handling inference. Your LM Studio server does the heavy thinking. Your phone manages the knowledge. Everything private.

Tool calling. Function-calling-capable models (Qwen 3.5, Llama 3.1, Mistral) can chain together web search, calculator, date/time, and device tools automatically. The model decides what it needs and fetches it.

On-device models. Off Grid runs smaller models directly on your Android phone with OpenCL GPU acceleration on Snapdragon chips. Qwen 3.5 2B on-device for when you leave the house. Qwen 3.5 9B on your LM Studio server for when you are home. Same app, same chats.

Vision and voice. Point your camera at something, ask what it is. Dictate with on-device Whisper. Attach documents. All of it works with both local and remote models.

You already own everything you need

No dedicated server. No cloud subscription. No new hardware. Your computer is the server. Your phone is the client. Your WiFi is the connection. You paid for all of it already.

The gap between local AI and cloud AI closed dramatically in early 2026. Qwen 3.5 9B running on consumer hardware delivers results that are, for daily use, indistinguishable from a $20/month cloud subscription. The only thing missing was a way to access that power from the device you actually carry with you all day.

That is what Off Grid does.

Where this is heading

We are building Off Grid into a personal AI operating system. All the compute you own - phone, laptop, desktop - orchestrated into one private system. Network discovery, on-device inference, projects, RAG, tool calling, vision, and voice are already live. Automatic routing, device handoff, and shared context across devices are next.

Built in the open. MIT licensed. Join the Off Grid Slack from our GitHub.

Try it

One checkbox on your desktop. One scan on your phone. Your LM Studio models are now portable.
