Open WebUI gives you a ChatGPT-style page for a model server you run yourself. Off Grid AI skips the server. You install one app on your computer or phone, pick a model, and the model runs inside the app. Images too.

Checked 29 October 2026 against docs.openwebui.com, Open WebUI's GitHub repository (v0.12.4) and Off Grid AI's release notes. "Not listed" means the feature is not on Open WebUI's own pages.
One app, no server
Open WebUI is an interface. Its docs install it with Docker, pip or a desktop app, then point it at Ollama or another OpenAI-compatible API. That's two things to install, update and keep running.
Off Grid AI Desktop (OGAD) is one download for Apple silicon Macs, Windows and Linux. The engine is inside. Pick a text model, and the app shows what fits your memory before it downloads. Then you chat. No containers, ports or second service.
Since 0.0.55, OGAD's AI engines (llama.cpp, whisper.cpp and stable-diffusion.cpp) update in the background. You get support for new models without rebuilding anything.
Images built in
Open WebUI's docs connect image generation through GPT-Image, Gemini or ComfyUI. Two of those are cloud services. The third is another server to run.
OGAD draws images on your graphics card with models such as RealVisXL V5.0 Lightning. The picture above took 6 steps at 1024 by 1024. Off Grid AI Mobile (OGAM) draws images on the phone with Stable Diffusion. Nothing leaves the device.
AI that lives on your phone
Open WebUI runs in a browser, so your phone needs a route back to your server. Away from home, that means a VPN or an open port.
OGAM runs the model on the phone. iPhone 12 and newer and Android phones with 4GB of RAM run small models. An iPhone 15 Pro runs Qwen 3.5 4B well. Chat, images, vision, voice input and Projects all work in airplane mode once a model is downloaded.
Keep your server if you like it
Already run Ollama on a big machine at home? Keep it. OGAM and OGAD can connect to a remote Ollama server on your network or VPN. You use the big model when you're home and the on-device model when you're not. One chat window either way.
Voice and documents included
OGAD listens with Whisper and answers aloud with Kokoro, on your computer. Projects answer questions about your files and cite the passage they used. Both work offline and need no add-on server.
For developers, OGAD runs one OpenAI-compatible API at 127.0.0.1:7878 that serves chat, images and speech. See the local API guide.
Switch in five minutes
- Download OGAD on your computer, and install OGAM from the App Store or Google Play.
- Download one model in each app. The apps show what fits before you download.
- Ask the question you last asked in Open WebUI.
- Ask for an image in the same chat.
No account and no server at any step.
What Pro adds
Pro is optional. It adds Sync across up to 5 devices, actions and drafts you approve, a hands-free voice mode on the phone, and searchable memory and meetings on the computer. On 29 October 2026 it costs $79.99 once, a limited-time price down from $119, or $7.99 a month. See Pro.
The free apps stay free. Chat, images, voice, Projects and the local API never need Pro.
FAQ
Does Open WebUI run AI models by itself?
Open WebUI's docs describe it as a self-hosted interface that connects to Ollama and OpenAI-compatible APIs. Off Grid AI runs the model inside the app with llama.cpp, so there is no separate server to install.
Is there a simpler alternative to Open WebUI?
Off Grid AI is one app for Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone or Android. Install it, download a model and start chatting offline, with no Docker and no account.
Can Off Grid AI generate images like Open WebUI?
Yes, with nothing else installed. Off Grid AI generates images on your computer's GPU or on your phone. Open WebUI's docs connect image generation through GPT-Image, Gemini or ComfyUI.
Can Off Grid AI use my existing Ollama server?
Yes. Off Grid AI can connect to a remote Ollama server on your network or VPN, alongside the models it runs on the device.
Is Off Grid AI free?
Yes. The core apps are free with no account. Mobile is MIT licensed and desktop is AGPL-3.0. Pro is optional and adds memory, approved actions and Sync.
Download Off Grid AI, pick one model, and chat privately in the next five minutes.
