Button's styling history is pretty ugly. It starts off as a O/S rendered replaced element and it's not so many years ago that I can remember that you could only have multiple lines of text in a button in Firefox. Despite how much things have improved recently, it's maybe little wonder that a generation of developers have avoided knowing its intricacies.
