How to Move a WhatsApp Group to Telegram (Without Losing Your Members)

I've moved more groups off WhatsApp than I can count — a flatmates' chat, a weekend football squad, a family group that had outgrown itself. Every time, someone asks the same two questions: "Can't we just export everything?" and "Is there a tool that does this automatically?" Here's the honest answer, and the process that actually works.

The hard truth: there is no importer

There is no button in WhatsApp that exports a group to Telegram, and Telegram cannot import a WhatsApp group. WhatsApp doesn't expose your member list or chat history to other apps, so no legitimate tool can pull it out for you. Any website promising a one-click "WhatsApp-to-Telegram migrator" is after your data, not your convenience. Don't paste your group's content into one.

What you can move is the people, not the data. That turns out to be fine, because a Telegram group takes about two minutes to create and the migration is really just a controlled handoff.

Step 1: Create the Telegram group

In Telegram: New Group, give it the same name your WhatsApp group had (familiarity matters — people should recognize what they're joining), and add whoever is already in your contacts. You can add a photo and description later. Telegram groups support up to 200,000 members, so it will outlive WhatsApp's 1,024-member ceiling many times over.

Step 2: Generate an invite link

Tap the group name → Add Members → Invite via Link, and copy the link. For a large or semi-public group, set the link to never expire. For a private one, you can leave join approval on. This link is the entire migration mechanism — treat it like the most important artifact of the move.

Step 3: Post the handoff message in WhatsApp

Send exactly one message in the old group, and pin it:

  • what the Telegram group is for,
  • the invite link,
  • the date you'll stop using WhatsApp.

One pinned message beats ten follow-ups. Latecomers will scroll up and find it.

Step 4: Run both groups briefly

Don't delete the WhatsApp group the same day. Run both for a week or two, re-share the link a couple of times, and answer questions wherever people ask them. Then post a final goodbye in WhatsApp and leave (or just let it go quiet). Groups that force a hard cutover lose the slow adopters; the ones that overlap keep nearly everyone.

Step 5: Rebuild the essentials — and the history question

Chat history genuinely doesn't transfer. WhatsApp's "Export Chat" produces a .txt file you can archive, but Telegram can't inject it back as real messages. Don't pay for any service claiming otherwise. Instead, treat the move as a fresh start:

  • Pin the group rules or purpose in the new group.
  • Set a group description so new joiners get context.
  • Re-create the recurring stuff with a bot. The first question every revived group asks is "when is the next game?" — a reminder bot that posts into the chat itself solves that permanently. NudgeRemindBot handles in-chat reminders on a 1-minute cron, and the free tier's 5 active reminders cover a weekly meetup comfortably. There's a full walkthrough in the Telegram reminder bot guide.

If your group split expenses, note that Telegram-side tracking is actually easier — you can export a proper CSV ledger later. See how to export group expenses to CSV if that applies to your group.

Should it even be a group?

One decision worth making before you migrate: if your WhatsApp group was really one-way announcements — a school class, a club, a newsletter — make the Telegram version a channel instead. Channels have effectively unlimited subscribers and only admins post. The trade-offs are laid out in Telegram group vs channel: which one do you actually need. Big communities often end up with both: a channel for announcements plus a linked discussion group.

Small quality-of-life wins after the move

Two things your members will notice immediately:

  • Phone numbers stay private. On Telegram, members can't see each other's numbers by default — many people quietly prefer this to WhatsApp.
  • Admin tools are stronger. Slow mode, per-member permissions, granular admin rights, and pinning all work better than WhatsApp's equivalents.

The full step-by-step with screenshots and FAQs lives in How to Move a WhatsApp Group to Telegram. The short version: create the group, share the link, pin the message, overlap for two weeks, and rebuild the recurring bits with a bot. That's the whole migration.
