WooCommerce Cart Not Updating? Here Are the 5 Real Causes

A shopper updates their cart quantity, hits update, and nothing happens. Or an item they removed is still sitting there. This is one of the fastest ways a store loses a sale — the shopper assumes the site is broken and leaves.

Here are the five real causes, in the order most likely to be the culprit.

1. Page caching (the most common cause)

Caching plugins speed up static pages beautifully, but the cart, checkout, and my-account pages must never be cached — they're dynamic and specific to each shopper. If your cache is serving a stale snapshot, quantity updates appear to do nothing.

Fix: exclude cart/checkout/my-account from your caching plugin's page-exclusion list, clear the cache, and test in an incognito window.

2. AJAX/JavaScript conflicts

WooCommerce updates the cart without a page reload using AJAX. A JavaScript error anywhere on the page (often a jQuery version conflict between plugins) can break the update button entirely.

Fix: open the browser console (right-click → Inspect → Console) while updating the cart, and look for red error messages. The script named in the error usually points to the conflicting plugin.

3. Session/cookie problems

WooCommerce tracks each shopper's cart via PHP sessions and cookies. Object caching (Redis/Memcached) misconfigured to interfere with session data, or a CDN stripping cookies for logged-out visitors, can cause items to vanish or the cart to reset randomly.

4. Theme/plugin conflicts

If the header mini-cart updates but the full cart page doesn't (or vice versa), that's a strong sign a theme or plugin is overriding one of WooCommerce's cart templates incorrectly. Test by temporarily switching to a default theme like Storefront.

5. Stock/variation sync

For variable products, if a specific variation goes out of stock while sitting in a cart, WooCommerce can reset the quantity or remove the item unexpectedly on update.

FAQs

Why does my cart show the wrong quantity? Almost always caching — the page is serving a stale snapshot instead of live data.

Does Cloudflare cause cart issues? It can, if dynamic pages aren't excluded from caching rules or cookies get stripped for logged-out visitors.

Should I disable all plugins to find the bug? Yes, temporarily, ideally on staging — deactivate everything except WooCommerce, confirm the cart works, then reactivate plugins one at a time.

Excluding cart, checkout, and account pages from every cache layer is easy to miss. I would test with a clean session and inspect the browser console at the same time, because stale cookies and JavaScript errors can look like the same cart problem.
