Templates have a reputation problem, and it is deserved: most templates are generic. But the problem is not that they are templates. It is that the template fixed the wrong layers.
Three layers, one decision
A short video has structure, content and voice. Structure is duration, pacing, shot count and transitions. Content is the subject and the occasion. Voice is music, captions and tone.
Most bad templates fix all three, so the only thing the user supplies is a name dropped into a corner. Most open-ended tools fix none, so quality is left to chance.
Fix structure, vary content
Structure is where craft lives. A deliberately paced clip with a real beat and a real cut point is a piece of production. Randomising it throws that away. When structure is trustworthy, the user's entire job becomes supplying good content.
Personal means responsive
The test is simple: does the input determine anything structural about the output? If the photo is pasted into a frame, the result is a frame with a photo. If the timing or framing responds to the input, it feels made for this instance.
Ship the constraint
The more confident you are about structure, the more the variations inside it read as intentional. Hedged templates produce mush.
A working example of a fixed occasion template is here: https://airapvideo.one/birthday-rap-song
