To merge PDFs on a Mac without uploading them, use a tool that runs on the Mac itself. Ours is Munchy Mates: click your pet with two fingers, pick Merge PDFs and drop your files on them. One new PDF lands on your Desktop or in Downloads, your originals stay exactly as they were, and nothing leaves your Mac.

That matters when the PDF is a tax form, a contract or a scan of your ID. An online merge site needs a copy of the file on someone else's computer, and you have to take their word for what happens to it next. Here's how the usual options compare:

Way Cost Uploaded? The catch
Munchy Mates $5 for the first 100 users No Apple silicon Macs with macOS 14 or later. It can't open a password-locked PDF.
Finder Comes with your Mac No Whole files only, and the order depends on how you select them.
Preview Comes with your Mac No It saves as you go, so the PDF you drag pages into changes unless you duplicate it first.
An online merge site Depends on the site Yes Your private file goes to a stranger's server, and you need a connection.

How do I merge PDFs with Munchy Mates?

Your pet lives above your Dock, so the tool is always one click away:

  1. Click your pet with two fingers (or right-click). Five PDF tools circle around them.
  2. Pick Merge PDFs. Their mouth opens, ready for food.
  3. Choose your PDFs in Finder, or drop them on your pet. Yuki keeps count: "Got 2! Drop more, or wait and I'll merge them."
  4. Wait a moment. You'll see "Nom nom... working on it!", then a "Ta-da!" that tells you where your new file is.

The pages follow the order you dropped the files in. Your originals are never changed, so if you get the order wrong, you can just feed them again.

Can I merge only some pages of a PDF?

Yes, in two bites. Use Split PDF first and pick the pages you want to keep, then feed those to Merge PDFs with your other files. Split makes new files too, so the full PDF stays safe.

Can I merge PDFs on a Mac without Adobe Acrobat?

Yes. Munchy Mates does it on its own, so you don't need Acrobat or an Adobe subscription.

Can I merge PDFs on a Mac with no internet?

Yes. After you activate your license key once, the PDF tools work offline. That's handy on a train, or when the Wi-Fi gives up the night a form is due.

Is it worth $5 just to merge PDFs?

Munchy Mates is for people who deal with PDFs often and would like some company while they do. You also get Split PDF, Compress PDF, PDF to Images and Images to PDF in the same ring.

And you get the pet, which is the real reason to adopt one. Pick a cat, a pup or a bunny and give them a name. They get hungry when your battery hits 20%, cry at 10%, eat the files you drag to them (those go to the Trash, so you can put them back) and sleep from 1 to 8 am. We wrote more about what a desktop pet that reacts to your Mac is like.
