Where do you seek freelance/short-term contract work?

Back in the day, I used to go on various freelancing websites, solicit local businesses for work, and just plain hit up CraigsList. I was wondering what everyone else has been doing :)

You have to send out 100s of emails to local businesses in my opinion. Build up your name. It's a lot of work at the beginning!

How do you get email addresses? Some businesses have facebook pages so I send messages there but the ones who just list a phone number how do you reach out without calling? I've heard email is very effective.

I just doubt if the local business would response you.
Am I required to send a proposal in order to get project? But actually, I do not know their business.

I've been very successful with the approach. I'm not saying it works for everyone, but good old fashioned networking works really well as long as you do it right.

Cold calls almost never worked for me.
