Your Users Are Getting Older Faster Than Your Designs

In much of the world, the fastest growing group of people using software is over sixty five. They bank online, book doctors through apps, renew parking permits on a phone and argue with chatbots about broken deliveries. Many have no choice, because the paper form and the branch office have quietly disappeared.

Meanwhile, a lot of software is still designed by people in their twenties and thirties, tested on the newest phones, and judged in a meeting room by people with excellent eyesight.

That mismatch is going to matter more every year. The details are not exotic. Eyes need larger text and stronger contrast. Hands need bigger buttons and more forgiving gestures. Memory needs flows that do not time out after ninety seconds or ask for a code that arrives on a different device. Confidence needs error messages that say what to do, not that something went wrong.

None of this is a niche requirement. Design that works for an eighty year old usually works better for everyone. For someone on a train with one free hand. For someone reading in bright sunlight. For someone with a migraine, or a broken wrist, or just a long day.

So here is a skill worth building now, whatever your role. Turn your phone's text size to the largest setting and use your own product for a day. Watch what breaks. Labels truncate. Buttons overlap. Screens that looked spacious become unusable. Fix one of them.

Respect the settings people have already chosen. If someone has set large text or reduced motion on their device, your app should follow it rather than override it.

And if you can, watch somebody older use what you built. A parent, a neighbour, a relative who calls you for help with their phone. Do not explain anything. Just watch where they hesitate. One afternoon of that teaches more than a checklist.

There is also a quieter reason to care. You will be one of these users. Every product you build now is a small vote on what technology will feel like for you in forty years.

Monday: set your phone to its largest text size and leave it there until Friday.
