Camry's New Cockpit Meets the Xiaomi Ecosystem: The Design Logic Behind It

The 2027 GAC Toyota Camry just launched with a major smart cockpit upgrade—and it now carries a Xiaomi ecosystem interface. Starting at 131,800 RMB (preferential price), it looks like a routine facelift, but dig into the details and there are several design decisions worth a designer's attention.

What the News Actually Says

The facelift has three core selling points: a smart cockpit upgrade, the Xiaomi ecosystem interface, and the 131,800 RMB entry price. The center screen is bigger, the infotainment system has a brand-new UI, and the steering wheel switched from a three-spoke to a more sporty design. But the most striking change isn't hardware—it's the Xiaomi ecosystem interface Toyota added to the cabin.

What does that mean? Your Xiaomi smart-home devices—air conditioner, robot vacuum, cameras—can now be controlled directly through the car's infotainment screen. Tap once on the way home and your AC is already running. The feature itself isn't new: Apple CarPlay and Huawei HiCar have done similar things for years. But Toyota choosing to partner with Xiaomi instead of building its own ecosystem is an interesting decision in itself.

On the interior side, Toyota clearly invested in CMF. The base trim uses fabric + faux leather, the mid trim adds ambient lighting and wood trim, and the top trim gets Nappa leather. The tactile differences between trims are significant—the top trim's steering wheel leather feels noticeably finer than the previous generation, and the stitching went from single-color to two-tone.

Three Design Takeaways from an Industrial Design Perspective

Takeaway One: Cross-Ecosystem Collaboration Is a New Variable in Cockpit Design

Toyota's old infotainment was a closed system—ugly UI, but stable. With the Xiaomi ecosystem onboard, the interface has to be redesigned: it must accommodate Xiaomi devices' interaction logic while keeping Toyota's own operating habits. For designers, this is a classic "two systems fusion" problem: how do you embed a third-party ecosystem seamlessly without breaking the existing user experience? Frankly, Toyota's UI designers have their work cut out.

Takeaway Two: CMF Tiering Strategy Is Getting More Refined

Fabric at the base, wood trim + ambient lighting at the mid, Nappa leather at the top—these three material tiers aren't arbitrary. Fabric emphasizes stain resistance and a youthful look; wood trim takes a warm, homey route; Nappa leather continues the traditional luxury feel. Each material targets a completely different user profile. Product designers can borrow this logic: how should CMF be tiered across SKUs of the same product so it covers different price points without cannibalizing itself?

Takeaway Three: The 131,800 RMB Price Reflects Design-Cost Tradeoffs

The Camry's segment is fiercely competitive—BYD Qin L and Xpeng MONA are all fighting for the same buyers. Toyota can price it this way because it managed design costs. The center screen uses cheaper LCD instead of OLED, ambient lighting only comes on mid/high trims, and even the steering wheel heating was cut from the base. These tradeoffs directly shape user perception—for designers, every feature's "keep or cut" decision is a cost calculation during product definition.

What Designers Can Take Away

First, cross-ecosystem integration is the trend, but how you integrate matters more than the feature itself. The Xiaomi ecosystem in a car isn't a technology problem—it's a design problem: how do you make operating home devices in the car feel natural, rather than like "one more app"?

Second, CMF tiering isn't simply "nice materials for expensive trims, cheap materials for cheap trims." Every material should have an explicit design intent.

Third, pricing strategy defines the design boundary. A 130K car can't use 300K craftsmanship—but the designer's job is to find the optimal solution within that constraint.

Coming back to the point: the most surprising thing about this facelift isn't the hardware upgrade. It's that Toyota finally realizes that in cockpit design, the software ecosystem matters as much as the hardware. Its infotainment was mocked for a decade; now it's willing to humble itself and integrate Xiaomi. The market has done its teaching.
