How to format a large print puzzle book for KDP

Large print puzzle books look simple, but they fail KDP's previewer for boring reasons: wrong page size, thin gutters, missing fonts. This is the checklist I use before uploading an interior PDF. Disclosure: I build a small tool for this (linked at the end), but everything below works with any layout software.

1. Pick the trim size first

Everything else (margins, columns, font size) depends on it. Two common choices for large print puzzle books:

  • 8.5 x 11 in: room for big grids, but KDP treats anything wider than 6.12 in or taller than 9 in as a "large trim size" with different printing costs.
  • 6 x 9 in: the standard size, cheaper to print, fits fewer grid columns.

Decide this before you design a single page. Changing it later means rebuilding every grid.

2. Page size with bleed

If any element touches the page edge (tinted backgrounds, borders), you need bleed. KDP's rule: 0.125 in extra on the top, bottom and outside edge.

  • Page width = trim width + 0.125 in
  • Page height = trim height + 0.25 in

Examples:

Trim Page size with bleed
6 x 9 in 6.125 x 9.25 in
8.5 x 11 in 8.625 x 11.25 in

If one page needs bleed, the whole file must be set up with bleed. If your book is white pages with black grids, skip bleed and keep it simple.

3. Margins: the gutter depends on page count

The inside (gutter) margin grows with the number of pages. KDP minimums:

Pages Inside margin
24-150 0.375 in
151-300 0.5 in
301-500 0.625 in
501-700 0.75 in
701-828 0.875 in

Top, bottom and outside margins: at least 0.25 in without bleed, 0.375 in with bleed.

These are minimums. For large print readers I would go bigger, because people hold the book open flat and the last letter in a row near the spine is easy to lose. A practical setup for a 100 page, 6 x 9 in puzzle book: 0.75 in inside, 0.5 in outside, 0.5 in top and bottom.

Also, the minimum page count for a black ink paperback is 24 pages.

4. Font size: "large print" is a promise to the reader

"Large print" is not a KDP setting, it is a convention. Most publishers treat 16 pt or larger body text as large print. For word search grids, the letters are the product, so go much bigger than body text: 26-28 pt letters are comfortable for older eyes.

Use a plain, high-contrast sans serif with clear letterforms (avoid fonts where I, l and 1 look alike). Pure black on white, no light grey.

5. Do the grid math before you design

Big letters limit how many columns fit. Quick formula:

columns = floor(text width / cell pitch)
cell pitch = letter size x ~1.3 (letter plus breathing room)
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Example, 6 x 9 in with 0.75 in inside and 0.5 in outside margins:

text width = 6 - 0.75 - 0.5 = 4.75 in = 342 pt
cell pitch (26 pt letters) = 26 x 1.3 = 33.8 pt
columns = floor(342 / 33.8) = 10
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

So a 10 column grid at 26 pt on a 6 x 9 in page. If you want 12 columns, you need either smaller letters or the 8.5 x 11 in trim.

6. One puzzle per page, and keep it solvable

  • One puzzle per page keeps print large and avoids bleed-through confusion on cream or white paper.
  • Run a solver on every grid before export. A word that is missing from the grid, or appears twice, makes the puzzle unsolvable and frustrates readers.
  • Keep the word list on the same page as the grid. Flipping pages is hard for the target audience.
  • Put the answer key at the back, with smaller but still readable grids.

7. Export a clean PDF

KDP accepts a print-ready PDF. Before upload:

  1. Embed all fonts (or convert text to outlines). Missing fonts are a common reason for rendering problems.
  2. Use exact page size from step 2, not "close enough".
  3. One page per PDF page, no spreads, no crop marks.
  4. Check page count against the gutter table, since adding answer pages can push you into the next gutter tier.
  5. Open the PDF at 100% zoom and check the first and last letter in the rows closest to the spine.

Then upload and use KDP's online previewer. Fix every warning, not only the red errors.

Quick checklist

  • [ ] Trim size chosen (6 x 9 or 8.5 x 11)
  • [ ] Bleed decided; page size matches the formula
  • [ ] Gutter meets the page count table (go bigger for large print)
  • [ ] Letters 26 pt or larger in grids
  • [ ] Every grid solved and verified
  • [ ] Fonts embedded
  • [ ] Previewer shows no warnings

A tool for this

I got tired of rebuilding the same layout by hand, so I made LargePrint Puzzle Studio. It ships large print word search templates (8.5 x 11 in with 28 pt letters, 6 x 9 in with 26 pt letters), checks every puzzle with a solver before exporting, and produces a KDP-ready PDF. If you want to try it, it is at largeprint.zhst.app.
