I recently moved my developer portfolio to my own domain, ayandev.site, and started working on its SEO.I thought having a live website with the right metadata would be enough. But I quickly realised there is more to it.
Here are 4 things I focused on while improving my portfolio's SEO.
Set up Google Search Console : I verified my domain and used URL Inspection to check how Google sees my pages. It helped me understand the difference between a live page and an indexed page.
Fixed the metadata : I reviewed my page titles, meta descriptions, canonical URLs, and Open Graph tags to make sure search engines and social platforms get the right information.
Checked my sitemap and robots.txt : I made sure my sitemap used the correct domain and checked that I wasn't accidentally blocking pages I wanted Google to find.
Checked the live website : I learned not to trust the code alone. The deployed website needs to return the correct metadata and URLs too. Even small things like a favicon can need extra checking.
The biggest lesson?
Getting indexed and ranking on Google are two different things. Even if Google can crawl your website, that doesn't mean it will rank well for your name or other search terms.I'm still working on improving my portfolio's visibility, and I'll share more as I learn. If you've worked on SEO for your own portfolio, what made the biggest difference for you?
