How many rounds of IVF does the NHS fund in England? It depends on your postcode

Short answer: the national guideline says up to three full cycles of IVF, and up to three more if the first three do not work. What you actually get is decided locally, and the average number of cycles funded across England is 1.4.

That gap is the whole story. Here are the sources, so you can check it yourself.

What the national guideline says

NICE replaced its fertility guideline on 31 March 2026 (NG257). For someone under 40 it says: "offer an initial 3 full cycles of IVF treatment." If there is no pregnancy after three full cycles: "consider up to 3 further full cycles." (NICE NG257, access criteria for IVF)

What the map says

IVF funding in England is set by its integrated care boards (ICBs), not nationally. NICE's resource impact report for NG257 (March 2026) puts the average number of IVF cycles funded at 1.4, drawing on the Department of Health and Social Care's own table of all 42 ICB policies (last updated 11 September 2025). Twenty-seven of the 38 published policies fund one cycle, and four ICBs were under review.

The map changed on 30 September 2026

Twelve old ICBs closed and six new ones took over on 30 September 2026, with more mergers due in April 2027. When areas merge, their fertility policies can be harmonised into one. As of 12 October 2026, the merged boards have not published new fertility policies and the government's per-ICB table is still the September 2025 version. So for now, most people are still living under the old local rules, with the next round of changes due in April 2027.

How to check your own area

The Progress Educational Trust (PET), a fertility charity, runs a free tracker: pick your ICB and see what level of IVF treatment it funds. Its own summary:

"In England, there is a huge disparity in NHS-funded fertility treatment across the country, with very few patients able to access the three full cycles of IVF recommended by the national guideline."

PET is an advocate, not a government page, so treat it as a starting point and confirm against your ICB's published policy. (PET NHS Fertility Funding Tracker)

The other line people hit: parental status

Many ICB policies also weigh whether either partner already has a child, including an adopted child, sometimes even if that child does not live with them. It varies by area. Read your ICB's own policy for this line before you assume you qualify.

If you want your own area checked

I read these policies at the source. Tell me your area and what you have been told, and I will check your ICB's published policy and write you one page: what is offered, what is missing, where it is written, every line sourced. $25 (about 20 pounds) by card, back within 48 hours. No promises, no miracle, just what the documents actually say.
