I had a similar experience, but more randomic. I (almost) didn't go to university, an I taught myself coding while I was working as library clerk. I approached any computer related technology I could find, from databases to svg, trying to understand what computers can really do. When by chance I started working as a (very) junior developer, my background was variegate, and I successfully worked on several projects using you approach: googling for a solution, adapting it and moving on.
Now, after 14 years of work in the field of web development, I feel that my understanding has become pretty deep: I can see problems and patterns unthinkable before, and I easily understand the vast majority of technical articles. But still, NOW I miss a more academic approach, and NOW I'm considering to apply to university again. Not for the title, I don't give a damn, but for the esoteric theory that now (14 years, remember) could be really useful.

So, my piece of advice: continue exploring because it's the fastest way to grow professionally, but keep an eye on the theory because one day it will be really useful! 😉
