Best way to compare IMO is to Twitter.
Think of an instance as Twitter. Now, imagine anyone create their own version (instance) of Twitter with their own separate rules and community topics.
And then, imagine you can combine all those instances into a single feed if you want to (The Fediverse) and anyone on the Fediverse, in any instance attached to the Fediverse, can read and interact with other people's toots across instances.
Aah ok I see, pretty cool. Will need to spend some time to find instances I will actually find interesting.
