GMX makes one app for reading its mail. It runs on iPhones, iPads and Android devices. GMX offers no GMX app MacBook users can install, and no GMX app Windows users can use either. On those computers you use a browser or a mail program.
This guide shows what exists on each device and how to install it. It also covers a second account, notifications, a PIN and common fixes. All GMX facts come from GMX's websites and the two app stores, read in October 2026. We are not affiliated with GMX. BillionVerify is an email verification service. For a short definition of the provider, read what GMX is in our glossary.
Key facts (checked October 2026):
- GMX's Mail app page states that the GMX Mail app runs on Android, iOS and iPadOS.
- The App Store labels the iPhone version as unverified for macOS, so no GMX app MacBook version is confirmed.
- The Android version has more than 10 million downloads, per its store entry.
- GMX's support pages say you need not log out of the app, and they advise a PIN.
- GMX's support pages set up Apple Mail on a Mac with imap.gmx.com as the incoming server.
- BillionVerify does not charge for unknown results.
Which GMX Apps Exist?
GMX offers one app for handheld devices and nothing of its own for desktops. The table sums up what GMX's sites say.
| Device | Official app | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone and iPad | GMX - Mail & Cloud | App Store |
| Android phone or tablet | Same name | Google Play |
| MacBook, iMac or Mac mini | None listed | A web browser, or Apple's Mail app |
| Windows PC | None listed | A web browser, Windows Mail, Outlook or Thunderbird |

GMX's German site lists the same two systems under "Kostenlose Android & iOS Apps". The app bundles mail, cloud storage for photos and files, and news. News is available in German only.
The app page names these features:
- Push alerts with a sound, vibration or LED light.
- Several GMX accounts side by side.
- A four-digit PIN lock.
- Encrypted messages, switched on once from a computer.
- Photo and video upload to the GMX Cloud over Wi-Fi.
GMX App for Mac: What Works on a MacBook
No GMX app MacBook owners can download exists on GMX's sites. The gmx.com page, the German page and the Help Center name phones and tablets only.
Apple's store entry adds one detail. It says "Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS." GMX has therefore not verified the iPhone version for Mac. We did not test it either.

A GMX app for Mac does not exist. Without a native GMX app MacBook setups still have three routes.
Use GMX Mail in a Browser
Open gmx.com in Safari, Chrome or Firefox and log in. Messages, contacts, calendar and cloud sit in one window. Our GMX login guide lists the sign-in link for each GMX domain.
Add GMX to Apple Mail
GMX documents this route in an article. First switch on POP3 and IMAP in your GMX account settings. Then follow GMX's steps:
- In the menu bar, click Mail, then Add Account.
- Choose Other Mail Account and click Continue.
- Type your name, GMX email and password, then click Sign In.
- Pick IMAP. Enter imap.gmx.com for incoming mail and mail.gmx.com for outgoing mail.
- Click Sign In once more.
Apple Mail then syncs with your mailbox.

GMX's server data lists port 993 for incoming mail. Outgoing mail uses port 587 with STARTTLS or port 465 with SSL/TLS. Our IMAP and SMTP settings guide has the full table and the steps for other programs.
Open the GMX Cloud in Finder
GMX describes one more Mac option, for files. In Finder, choose Go, then Connect to Server. Enter https://storage-file-eu.gmx.com as the server. Use your GMX email and an app-specific password that you create first. The cloud then opens as a network drive.
GMX App Windows Options
Windows is in the same position. GMX ships no GMX app Windows owners can install for mail. One article is called GMX Search for Windows, but it describes a taskbar search tool. It is not a mail program.
Pick one of these instead:
- Browser. Open gmx.com, as on a Mac.
- Windows Mail. GMX has a setup page with imap.gmx.com on port 993 and mail.gmx.com on port 587. Its pictures come from Windows 8, so your menus may differ.
- Outlook or Thunderbird. GMX has IMAP setup pages for both.
Each program needs POP3 and IMAP switched on in your account first.
Install the GMX Mail App on iPhone or Android
The GMX mobile app is free to download. Both stores list in-app purchases, and the Android entry adds that it contains ads.
iPhone and iPad
- Open the App Store on your iPhone and search for GMX - Mail & Cloud. The seller is 1&1 Mail & Media GmbH.
- Tap Get. The listing shows a size of 391.3 MB.
- Open the app and type your GMX email and your password.
Version 10.19 came out on October 19 and needs iOS 18.0 or later, the listing says. A Help Center article on mobile sign-in names older minimums: iOS 12 and app version 7.3. The two sources differ, so check the listing for your own iPhone.
Android
- Open the Play Store on your Android phone and search for the app by name.
- Tap Install.
- Launch it and enter the login details of your GMX account.
Screenshot: the app's entry on Google Play.
The entry shows a 4.5 rating from 845K reviews. For logging in, GMX asks for Android 5 or higher and app version 5.1 or higher.
Stay Signed In
You do not need to log out after each use. According to GMX, logging out of the app brings no security gain. It also warns that constant sign-ins can reset personal settings. A PIN is the better lock, as described below.
To read the app version on Android, open the menu and tap Info/Legal. On iPhone, touch your profile icon and then Info and legal.
Add a Second GMX Account
The app handles several GMX accounts at once, and GMX describes this as working without restrictions. Each account keeps its own settings.
On iPhone or iPad:
- Touch the profile icon in the upper left corner.
- Choose Add Account.
- Sign in with the other mailbox.
On Android:
- Open the menu, then Settings.
- Select Add account.
- Fill in the address and password of the second mailbox.
Switch between mailboxes in the menu. On Android you can also pick a default sender for new messages. Open Settings, select your email and set Default account.
Mailboxes from other providers, such as mail.com, arrive through the Mail Collector. GMX says you set that up from a computer. The app then displays them without more work.
Notifications and PIN Protection
Push Notifications
On iPhone, open the profile menu, then Settings, then Notification (Push). Switch it on or off there.
On Android, go to Settings, then your email. Choose the notification options for mail and select all GMX notifications. Sliders let you pick a ring tone and vibration.
GMX recommends keeping push on and setting quiet periods instead. On Android, quiet time sits in General settings under Do Not Disturb. Turn it on now or add a start and end time.
PIN Protection
A PIN keeps others out without logging you out. GMX describes it as optional.
- iPhone. Open Settings and choose PIN protection mode. Face ID can replace the PIN. The PIN comes up after 10 or 30 seconds, after 1, 2 or 3 minutes, or at each app switch.
- Android. Under Privacy in General settings, choose PIN lock. The app can lock after one minute, 5, 10, 15 or 30 minutes, or only when you lock it by hand.
If Android never asks for the PIN, look at the Lock app after setting. It may be on manual lock only.
When the GMX App Will Not Sign In
The App Is Too Old
GMX no longer supports old versions, for security reasons. Update the GMX mobile app first. Then compare your phone's system version with the numbers above. If you cannot update, GMX says a web browser still reaches your mailbox.
The Account Is Locked
Some locks show no error in the app. Log in at GMX in a browser and read the notice that appears afterwards. Follow what it says.
GMX Has a Technical Problem
Each support page carries a server status message near the top. Read it before you reset anything.
Forgot Your Password or Address
GMX points to password.gmx.com for a new password. For a forgotten address, it suggests your browser's saved logins. The GMX login guide linked above covers both cases. For plans and storage limits, see GMX Mail features.
Emailing GMX Users? Verify Before You Send
Some readers write to people who use GMX. If your list holds gmx.com, gmx.net, gmx.de or gmx.at addresses, check them before a campaign. Typos and dead mailboxes cause bounces.
BillionVerify's email verifier tests one address or a whole list. Here is what to know:
- valid and invalid results cost 1 credit each, and unknown results are free
- a free re-check is available within 24 hours
- catch-all addresses get their own label and are not counted as valid
- the free tier adds 20 credits per active day, up to 600 a month, and they never expire
- no credit card is needed to start
- a REST API, an MCP server and 25+ integrations are available
- the servers are in France (EU), and a DPA can be signed
BillionVerify checks an address in steps, from syntax to mail routing.
For a big list, use bulk email verification. Our reverse email lookup shows the domain and public profiles tied to an address. If you collect phone numbers next to addresses, our phone checker shows whether a number is valid for its country. We make no claim about how GMX answers checks.
