I built a free ecommerce ROI calculator because sellers keep mixing‑up ROI and ROAS

I spend a lot of time talking to Amazon and Shopify sellers, and one dangerous mistake keeps showing up over and over. People look at their ad dashboard, see a solid ROAS number, and immediately assume their product investment is profitable.

Here is a conversation I hear all too often:

“My ads are hitting 3.8x ROAS, this product is killing it. I’m going to double my inventory order and scale ad spend.”

Six to eight weeks later, they have plenty of sales volume, but their bank account is not growing. Sometimes they are even losing money.

The two things that mess sellers up

1. Confusing ROAS with true ROI

ROAS only compares total revenue against ad spend. It completely ignores product cost, inbound shipping, prep fees, platform commissions, return losses and all other capital you pour into inventory. You can have a fantastic‑looking ROAS while your overall investment return is negative.

Many sellers treat ROAS as their full picture metric. They make inventory buying decisions based purely on ad platform reporting, without accounting for every dollar they have sunk into the product. That is how promising listings quietly burn cash.

2. Ignoring time horizon when measuring returns

A 66.67% ROI sounds great on paper. But if that return takes 90 days to materialize versus 6 weeks, it is a completely different business outcome. Most spreadsheets and free online calculators only output static ROI percentage. They skip annualized return and payback period — two numbers critical for ecommerce capital planning. You need to know how fast your money comes back so you can reinvest into your next product.

I tried a bunch of existing ROI calculators online and ran into familiar pain points.

  • Generic finance calculators have zero ecommerce context. They do not distinguish between inventory capital, ad spend and operating overhead.
  • E‑commerce tools lock advanced outputs like payback period or annualized ROI behind paid tiers.
  • Many force account creation before you can run a single calculation.
  • Almost none side‑by‑side clarify the critical difference between ROI and ROAS for cross‑channel sellers.

So I built the tool I wished I had, as part of the MerchCalc suite.

MerchCalc E‑commerce ROI Calculator

It is a browser‑native ROI calculator built for Amazon, Shopify and cross‑border sellers. All calculations run locally on your browser. None of your sales or investment data ever gets uploaded to any server. No login required, 100% free.

MerchCalc E-commerce ROI Calculator interface

Inputs it supports

Basic fields

  • Investment Period (Days)

Expandable Advanced Options for granular cost breakdown:

  • COGS / Product Cost ($)
  • First‑Mile Shipping Cost ($)
  • Platform Commission (%)
  • Ad Spend ($)
  • Refund / Return Loss ($ or %)
  • Fixed Operating Costs ($)

What it outputs

✅ Net Profit ($)
✅ ROI percentage
✅ Annualized ROI / CAGR %
✅ Payback Period (Days)
✅ ROAS (auto‑calculated once ad spend is entered)
✅ Revenue / Cost Ratio
✅ Visual revenue breakdown donut chart
✅ Quick profit status notification: Investment is profitable at the current inputs.

✅ Built‑in scenario simulation: tweak revenue or cost values and watch all metrics update instantly
✅ Works for product launches, ad campaigns, or mixed business investments
✅ No paywall, no sign‑up, offline‑capable local‑browser computation

Real demo case (default example preloaded inside the calculator)

This is the pre‑loaded example built directly into our ROI calculator for you to test right away.

Input values:
| Input Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Total Revenue / Sales | $10,000 |
| Total Investment / Cost | $6,000 |
| Investment Period | 90 Days |
| All advanced cost fields | $0 / 0% |

Calculator computed results:
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Net Profit | $4,000.00 |
| ROI | 66.67% |
| Annualized ROI / CAGR | 693.82% |
| Payback Period | 135 Days |
| Revenue / Cost Ratio | 1.67x |

Since Ad Spend = $0 in this demo case, ROAS does not generate a value. Once you input your real ad spend number, the ROAS metric will populate automatically for your advertising performance review.

The donut chart visualizes the $10,000 total revenue split: $6,000 total investment (60%) and $4,000 net profit (40%).

This demo case is positive and healthy. You can modify the numbers to simulate worse scenarios: increase your total investment, add COGS, platform fees, return losses and fixed operating costs to stress‑test whether your product idea remains profitable. This is the core value: before sending bulk inventory overseas, run your full set of projected numbers through this calculator.

What’s next

This remains my side‑project, and I’m continuing iteration. I plan to add more scenario comparison workflows, export options, and tighter alignment with our existing profit and break‑even calculators.

If you are an ecommerce seller or indie builder, I really value your feedback. What inputs or outputs are missing for your product research workflow? Bug reports and feature suggestions are welcome.

What metric do you catch yourself mixing up most often? For me it was definitely confusing ROAS for real investment returns early in my selling days.

If you want to ground your ROI work with profit and break‑even forecasting, I built related tools in the same toolset.
