Japan was one of the first countries to regulate crypto properly, so the landscape here is mature: FSA-registered exchanges, clean JPY on-ramps, and strong consumer protection. The catch is tax. Here's the honest local picture for 2026.
The short version
For most users in Japan, the practical options are the FSA-registered domestic exchanges:
- bitFlyer — largest by volume, deep JPY liquidity.
- Coincheck — the most beginner-friendly app.
- bitbank — popular for lower spot fees and altcoins.
- GMO Coin — strong all-rounder from a large financial group.
Fund with JPY by bank transfer or convenience-store deposit. For derivatives or coins not listed locally, some users add Bybit or KuCoin.
Strong protection, thanks to regulation
Japan tightened its rules after the Mt. Gox and Coincheck hacks: registered exchanges must segregate customer assets and hold most funds in cold storage. That's why a domestic, FSA-registered exchange is the safest place to buy.
The tax catch (important)
This is the part people underestimate. In Japan, crypto profits are treated as miscellaneous income (雑所得) and taxed under the progressive system — combined national and local rates can reach around 55% at the top bracket. Then self-custody
