5 practical tips for identifying fonts from screenshots

Spotting a great typeface in the wild is easy - naming it is not. Here are five practical tips that make font identification from screenshots much faster.

1. Crop before you identify

Trim the image to just the letterforms you care about. Extra background, gradients, and overlapping shapes confuse any recognition pipeline.

2. Straighten the perspective

A poster photographed at an angle distorts letter proportions. Flatten the crop first, even roughly, and match quality jumps noticeably.

3. Two or three clean glyphs beat a whole paragraph

Distinctive characters - a lowercase g, an unusual R - carry more signal than long runs of text. Pick samples that are sharp and well-lit.

4. Use on-device recognition for sensitive work

Tools like Typeye run the entire matching pipeline in your browser: the screenshot never leaves your machine, which matters when you handle unreleased brand material.

5. Verify with license sources

Once you have candidate matches, check the foundry page for licensing. A match without a license check is only half an answer.
