How to Hack Video Retention with Logic Gaps

Your tech review has 4K footage, slick B-roll, and perfect lighting. Yet viewers bounce in the first 15 seconds. Why? Because you gave them the answer before they even felt the itch.

If you want higher retention, ditch the linear setup and start using the Logic Gap framework.

The Logic Gap works by pairing two contrasting facts that force the viewer’s brain to ask: "Wait, how does that work?" It creates a micro-dose of cognitive dissonance that can only be resolved by watching your video.

Here is the formula:
Established Tech Truth + Counter-Intuitive Reality = Logic Gap

Compare these two hooks:

Linear: "Today we’re reviewing the new M3 Max MacBook Pro to see if it’s worth $4,000."

Logic Gap: "Apple’s M3 Max destroys $5,000 desktop GPUs in raw benchmarks. But if you’re buying one for video editing, you’re completely throwing your money away."

The second hook creates an instant paradox. Apple makes powerful chips (Fact A), but buying one is a mistake (Fact B). The viewer’s brain demands an explanation.

Here’s another example for a coding or software channel:
"This open-source script runs on a $5 Raspberry Pi. Yet it’s currently threatening
a $10 billion SaaS company’s core business model."

To execute this in your next script:

  1. Find the flex: What makes the tech impressive or standard practice?
  2. Find the paradox: What makes no sense, breaks the rule, or flies in the face of logic?
  3. Smash them together in line one: Never reveal the answer until you’ve built the tension.

Stop opening videos with boring specs. Open them with a paradox, bridge the gap, and watch your average view duration skyrocket.
