Master Open Loop Hooks to Skyrocket Video Retention

Your audience has the attention span of a goldfish on espresso. If you don't grab them in the first 5 seconds of your tech video, they’re clicking away to a video about a capybara playing the drums.

Enter the Open Loop Hook.

Borrowed from Hollywood screenwriting, an "open loop" is a psychological trick. You tease a crucial piece of information early in the video (opening the loop) and intentionally delay the payoff until later (closing the loop). Because the human brain craves closure, viewers stay glued to the screen to get the answer.

Most tech creators start videos like a boring lecture:

"Today, we’re reviewing the new M4 MacBook Pro and testing its benchmark scores."

That’s a closed loop. There's no tension.

Here’s how you rewrite it using an Open Loop Hook:

"Apple claims this M4 MacBook is an absolute powerhouse, but after 30 days of testing, one unexpected hardware flaw completely derailed my workflow. I’ll show you what happened in a minute, but first, let’s look at the raw speed tests."

Boom. Loop opened.

The viewer has to know what that flaw is. They’ll sit through the benchmark talk just to satisfy their curiosity, spiking your retention graph right where it usually dips.

To use this framework in your next script, follow this simple formula:

  1. The Tease: Drop a high-stakes question, weird anomaly, or surprising result in the first 10 seconds.
  2. The Delay: Pivot directly into your core content, subtly reminding them the answer is coming.
  3. The Payoff: Deliver on your promise later in the video (always deliver—never pure clickbait).

Stop giving away the ending in your intro. Open a loop, hold the payoff, and watch your average view duration soar.
