Master the Logic Gap Framework to Keep Viewers Hooked

You know that painful cliff-dive in your YouTube retention graph at the 30-second mark? It happens because your intro answered the viewer's question before they felt the need to stick around.

If you want viewers hooked for the long haul, master the Logic Gap framework.

A Logic Gap triggers cognitive dissonance. You present two true, yet seemingly contradictory tech facts. Because the human brain hates unresolved paradoxes, it forces the viewer to keep watching just to restore order to their worldview.

Here is the basic formula:

[Accepted Norm] + [Contradictory Tech Reality] = Immediate Friction

Compare these two intro scripts:

  • Standard Intro: "Today we’re reviewing the new M3 MacBook Air to see if it’s worth upgrading from your old Intel Mac."
  • Logic Gap Intro: "Apple claims the M3 Air is their most efficient laptop ever. But during my stress test, a 2019 Intel Mac actually beat it in battery life by 20 minutes. Something doesn't add up."

The second intro creates a puzzle. The viewer knows Apple silicon is superior, so the Intel win breaks their mental model. They have to watch to resolve the gap.

Here is another example for software and productivity creators:

  • Logic Gap: "This open-source app is faster, cleaner, and cheaper than Notion—yet 90% of tech creators actively avoid it. Here is the hidden fatal flaw no one is talking about."

How to apply it to your next tech script:

  1. Find the baseline: What does your audience assume about this chip, workflow, or flagship phone?
  2. Expose the glitch: What weird spec, edge case, or counter-intuitive result breaks that assumption?
  3. Withhold the solution: Slam those two facts together in your hook, but delay the resolution until your mid-roll.

Stop summarizing your specs up front. Open a Logic Gap and force your audience to stay for the answer.
