Master the Open Loop Hook to Skyrocket Video Retention

Your audience is one swipe away from bouncing. You’ve got roughly five seconds to stop the scroll—and if your opening line is "Hey guys, today we're looking at the new M3 MacBook," you’ve already lost.

Enter the Open Loop Hook.

Borrowed from Hollywood screenwriters, an open loop creates psychological tension by opening an information gap in the viewer's mind—and deliberately delaying the payoff. Human brains hate unfinished business. When you tease a crazy result, a high-stakes failure, or an unanswered question right at the start, your viewer’s brain craves resolution. They literally have to keep watching to feel satisfied.

Here’s how most tech creators hook an audience (and tank their retention):

"Today I’m testing this $1,600 GPU to see if it’s worth buying for 4K editing." (Boring. Loop closed.)

Here’s the Open Loop transformation:

"I spent $1,600 on this GPU, but halfway through rendering, it did something I’ve never seen a graphics card do before. By the end of this video, you'll see why it completely broke my workflow—and why I'm still not returning it."

Notice what happened? You opened two massive loops:

  1. What weird thing did the GPU do?
  2. Why isn't he returning it if it broke his workflow?

Now, your viewer is locked in through the specs, benchmarks, and thermal tests just to get those two answers.

Rules for executing this flawlessly:

  • Show the mystery early: Flash a weird error code, a bizarre benchmark spike, or a broken setup in the first 5 seconds.
  • Delay the context: Give them the what at the start, but save the why and how for the final third of the video.
  • Always close the loop: Never clickbait. If you don't deliver the answer, you ruin viewer trust forever.

Master the open loop, and your retention graphs will stop diving off a cliff.
