Why Sora 2 Makes Me Nervous (and Excited) About AI Video
I got early access to Sora 2 last month. The quality jump from Sora 1 is real. But it also raises questions I haven't figured out yet.
What Changed
Sora 1: Useful for B-roll, filler content, experimental stuff. Noticeably synthetic.
Sora 2: Approaching commercial quality. I generated a 15-second product showcase that a client couldn't distinguish from a $3,000 studio shoot.
The prompt that worked:
"Close-up of a matte black wireless earbuds case on concrete surface.
Slow rotation. Cinematic lighting, shallow depth of field.
Subtle dust particles in air. Product photography style."
That's it. 30 seconds of work, $0 cost. Previously this would have been a half-day studio shoot.
The Economics Are Wild
A friend runs a small production company. His quote for the same video:

The Nervous Part
I'm not worried about my job — I'm worried about whose jobs disappear first.

- Small studio owners
- Entry-level videographers
- Product photographers for e-commerce
These aren't "replaceable" jobs in the abstract. They're real people with real mortgages.
What I'm Doing About It
Short-term: Using the tools because clients expect efficiency.
Medium-term: Building a service layer on top of AI generation — prompt engineering, workflow design, quality control. The tooling gets commoditized; the curation doesn't.
Long-term: Teaching younger creators to use AI as a starting point, not an endpoint. The person who reviews 50 AI-generated clips and picks the best one adds real value.
What I Actually Built
Last week I put together a full workflow using Sora 2 + an aggregation platform:
- Generate 10 clips with varied prompts
- Pick the best 3
- Upscale and stabilize
- Add music (also AI-generated)
- Deliver to client
Total time: 25 minutes. Client was satisfied.
The Honest Verdict
Sora 2 is a 10x productivity tool for specific use cases. It's not a replacement for human creativity. But it is a replacement for commodity production work.
If you're in video production, the question isn't "Will this affect me?" — it's "How do I position myself above the commodity line?"
