Square footage is the one number behind almost every DIY project: flooring orders, paint gallons, carpet quotes, and even home listings. The math is simple — length times width — but the traps are everywhere: L-shaped rooms, wall area versus floor area, and the square-feet-to-square-yards divide-by-9 conversion carpet stores use.
The core formula
Every square-footage calculation starts here:
Area = length × width (both in feet)
A 12 ft × 10 ft bedroom is 12 × 10 = 120 square feet. That's it. Everything else is applying this formula to the right shapes and subtracting the right openings.
L-shaped rooms: the split-and-add method
An L-shaped room is just two rectangles touching at a corner. Split the L into two non-overlapping rectangles, calculate each area, and add them.
Worked example: rectangle A is 18 × 12 = 216 sq ft; rectangle B is 10 × 8 = 80 sq ft. Total: 216 + 80 = 296 sq ft. (Pro tip: the most common mistake is letting the two rectangles overlap at the shared strip — sketch the room first and draw the dividing line where the L bends.)
If you want to skip the sketching, a free square footage calculator handles rectangular and irregular rooms for you.
Wall area for paint: a different formula
Paint is bought for wall area, not floor area. The formula:
(2 × (length + width)) × ceiling height − openings = paintable wall area
Worked example — a 12 × 14 ft bedroom with 8-ft ceilings, one door, one window:
- Perimeter: 2 × (12 + 14) = 52 ft
- Gross walls: 52 × 8 = 416 sq ft
- Subtract openings: one door (~21 sq ft) + one window (~15 sq ft) = 36 sq ft
- Net paintable: 416 − 36 = 380 sq ft
Two coats = 760 sq ft. At the safe coverage of 350 sq ft per gallon of latex paint: 760 ÷ 350 = 2.17 → buy 3 gallons.
Flooring: measure wall to wall, then add waste
For flooring, measure each room wall to wall (flooring runs under baseboards), multiply length × width, add rooms together — then add a waste factor:
- Straight-lay installation: +10%
- Diagonal, herringbone, or pattern layouts: +15%
Worked example: a 12 × 10 ft room is 120 sq ft; with 10% waste you order 120 × 1.10 = 132 sq ft. If your LVP boxes cover 19.41 sq ft each: 132 ÷ 19.41 = 6.8 → 7 boxes.
Carpet: the divide-by-9 trap
Carpet in the US is priced and sold by the square yard, and one square yard is 3 ft × 3 ft = 9 square feet — not 3. The classic mistake is dividing square feet by 3.
Worked example: a 12 × 15 ft room is 180 sq ft. Add 10% waste first: 180 × 1.10 = 198 sq ft. Then convert: 198 ÷ 9 = 22 square yards to order. At $28/sq yd, that's 22 × 28 = $616 in material.
Why the order of operations matters
Two rules that save real money:
- Add waste before converting units (198 sq ft ÷ 9, not 180 ÷ 9 + waste). Adding 10% after dividing by 9 gives a different, smaller number.
- Doors and windows subtract from wall area, never from floor area — flooring goes under the door swing.
The square footage calculator at Calcrio runs all of these modes — rooms, walls, irregular shapes, feet or meters — free and instant, so you can double-check any measurement before you buy.
