Vancouver International Airport (YVR) recently became the first in Canada to launch biometric boarding for Air Canada and U.S.-bound flights. On the surface, it’s a story about traveler convenience. Under the hood, it’s a massive case study in the deployment of facial comparison technology at scale. For developers working in computer vision (CV) and biometrics, this rollout highlights a critical shift: the transition from experimental "recognition" to high-accuracy, 1:1 "comparison" as a standard identity credential.

The Algorithm: 1:1 Comparison vs. 1:N Search

In the CV world, we often distinguish between facial recognition (searching a face against a massive database of 1:N entries) and facial comparison (verifying a face against a known source, like a passport).
