Disclosure: I'm part of the team at CellShoppe Phone & Laptop Fix, a repair shop in West Edmonton, Alberta, that has been operating since 2015. This post is based on questions we hear at the counter.
Whether you write code or just use your phone every day, a cracked screen or a laptop that will not boot catches everyone off guard. Here is the checklist we share with customers before they bring a device in, and it works just as well if you are the one sending a device off for repair.
1. Back up first, and verify the backup
The repair is rarely the scary part. Losing data is. If you use cloud backup, open your photos or files and confirm the latest items actually synced. Do not assume it finished. If you prefer a local copy, plug the device into a computer and make a full backup as a second layer.
If the screen is already unresponsive and you cannot unlock the device, say so right away. Data recovery and data transfer options work best when they start early.
- Write down every symptom
"My screen is cracked" is only part of the story. Note everything: does it charge slowly, restart on its own, get warm, or lose touch response in one corner? Those details help separate a screen problem from a battery or charging port problem, and that distinction decides what you actually pay for.
- Know your credentials
Technicians often need to test the device after the repair. Remember your passcode, and make sure your account recovery details are up to date. If you are unsure which security settings to change before a repair, ask the shop first and follow their instructions.
- Mention your exact model
If you need iPhone screen replacement or Samsung screen replacement, tell the shop the exact model. Parts differ between generations. When you compare iPhone screen repair and Samsung screen repair options, ask what they check before quoting: touch response across the full panel, brightness, and whether the frame is bent. A frame warped in a drop can stop a new screen from sitting properly.
- Ask for a diagnostic before a quote
A proper diagnostic tells you what is actually wrong. Some problems that look like a screen fault turn out to be a worn battery or a loose port. At our shop the diagnostic is free, and you decide what happens next.
- Protect the device until the repair
If the glass is splintering, cover it with a screen protector or clear tape. If the device got wet, switch it off and do not charge it. Not every water-damaged device can be saved, but quick action gives it the best chance, and an honest shop will tell you what can and cannot be repaired.
- Choose a service that fits your schedule
Not everyone can drop a device off during working hours. Some shops offer repair at your home. We run a service called Doorstep Fix, where a technician repairs your device at your place in Edmonton, at a time that suits you.
Beyond phones
The same checklist works for laptops and MacBooks. Along with phone repair and mobile repair for batteries, charging ports, cameras, and speakers, we handle mobile phone repair for water damage and software problems. We also help with Windows installation, virus removal, USB and HDMI port problems, and gaming consoles.
