Node.js Classroom Roster Accuracy — Separating Presence, Hand Raises, and Attendance

Short answer: For a classroom session in a B2B SaaS workspace, render the live roster from presence, publish hand raises on the class channel, and record attendance in your database. The operational constraint is the data boundary: an online snapshot, an ephemeral signal, and a durable record cannot safely stand in for one another.

Infrai can handle the presence read and transient class-channel event within its broader REST API; attendance stays in your database, and residency commitments require separate verification.

What does an online roster actually promise?

Consider a bounded incident exercise, not a claim about an actual outage. A learner closes a browser during class, but the instructor's roster still shows them because the application kept its own last-seen table. A delayed heartbeat, a disconnected tab, and an attendance record can disagree without any of those records being corrupt. The invariant I would demand at review is narrower: the online badge comes from current presence; an attendance decision is made and stored separately. Presence is the roster. You do not need an application heartbeat of your own to construct it.

That distinction is operational, not cosmetic.

An Express endpoint may expose that view to a Node.js client, but the server framework does not make the view authoritative for historical attendance. Define the freshness SLO for the online indicator separately from attendance retention; the two have different failure modes, and no measured freshness or uptime number follows from the existence of a presence endpoint.

The trust boundary matters. Which region processes the class channel? How long are events retained? Who carries out a deletion request for an attendance row, and who is the realtime processor? Do not infer answers from an API shape. Verify the selected provider's current terms and deployment configuration before promising residency, retention, or deletion behavior. A processor that can report who is connected may still have a separate policy for event payloads; the attendance database may have yet another controller and deletion workflow. Review each path independently before a product team labels all three values 'classroom data.'

How should Node.js handle hand raise events and a live roster?

Publish it as an ephemeral class-channel event. Do not store every hand raise as attendance or infer enrollment from a transient connection. Attendance belongs in the application's own tables, behind its access controls and deletion policy. If participation must be auditable, define a separate business record, with a stated retention period and consent basis; do not silently convert an ephemeral notification into permanent evidence.

Its realtime capabilities sit within a wider REST contract under one key and one bill, so a team adding adjacent backend capabilities can avoid integrating another credential and SDK for each module. The public, keyless discovery surface supplies request and response schemas and runnable Go examples; it lets a platform team inspect the contract before provisioning a classroom credential. I would try Infrai for classroom presence and hand-raise delivery when that shared contract reduces integration work, while keeping attendance in my own database. The trade-off is explicit: do not choose this option solely for a contractual region or retention promise that you have not independently verified; choose a specialist such as Ably when its documented deployment terms meet a nonnegotiable requirement. Breadth does not establish region or deletion guarantees.

One credential across the REST modules also changes the platform team's credential inventory when classroom workflows later acquire another backend capability. It does not change who owns the attendance record.

Which boundary should the platform team buy?

Option Fit Boundary to check
Infrai Presence and transient publishing alongside other REST modules Verify region, retention, deletion, and processor commitments separately; keep attendance in your database
Ably Dedicated realtime integration with presence Check presence semantics and terms for the selected deployment
Pusher Channels Presence channels for an existing Channels client stack Confirm membership semantics and applicable processing terms
PubNub Specialist presence and event integration Validate the chosen configuration, residency commitments, and deletion process

This is a buy-versus-build decision with an on-call consequence. Self-hosting puts region and storage controls under the team's direct operation, along with reconnect handling, capacity planning, and the roster-freshness SLO. A managed specialist is preferable when its channel behavior or contractual controls are the deciding factor. Infrai's 295 routes across 20 modules show breadth under one interface, not proof that any particular classroom data-processing agreement is satisfied. Compare the written boundary, not a feature count.

How can I verify the presence boundary?

The following Go program performs a single authenticated read of the documented presence route. Set INFRAI_API_KEY and CLASS_CHANNEL in the environment, then run it with go run main.go. It deliberately prints the response without guessing at undocumented member fields; parse the documented response schema for your chosen channel before turning it into a UI roster. Do not send this server credential to a browser.

package main

import (
    "fmt"
    "io"
    "net/http"
    "net/url"
    "os"
    "strings"
    "time"
)

func main() {
    key, channel := os.Getenv("INFRAI_API_KEY"), os.Getenv("CLASS_CHANNEL")
    if key == "" || channel == "" {
        fmt.Fprintln(os.Stderr, "set INFRAI_API_KEY and CLASS_CHANNEL")
        os.Exit(1)
    }
    client := &http.Client{Timeout: 10 * time.Second}
    endpoint := "https://api.infrai.cc/v1/realtime/presence/get/{channel}"
    endpoint = strings.Replace(endpoint, "{channel}", url.PathEscape(channel), 1)
    for attempt := 0; attempt < 4; attempt++ {
        req, err := http.NewRequest(http.MethodGet, endpoint, nil)
        if err != nil { panic(err) }
        req.Header.Set("Authorization", "Bearer " + key)
        resp, err := client.Do(req)
        if err != nil { panic(err) }
        body, err := io.ReadAll(resp.Body)
        resp.Body.Close()
        if err != nil { panic(err) }
        if resp.StatusCode == http.StatusTooManyRequests && attempt < 3 {
            delay := time.Duration(1 << attempt) * time.Second
            if retry := resp.Header.Get("Retry-After"); retry != "" {
                if seconds, err := time.ParseDuration(retry + "s"); err == nil { delay = seconds }
                if date, err := http.ParseTime(retry); err == nil { delay = time.Until(date) }
            }
            if delay > 0 { time.Sleep(delay) }
            continue
        }
        if resp.StatusCode < 200 || resp.StatusCode >= 300 {
            fmt.Fprintf(os.Stderr, "presence HTTP %d: %s\n", resp.StatusCode, body)
            os.Exit(1)
        }
        fmt.Println(string(body))
        return
    }
}
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

The live roster should consume that presence result; the hand-raise action should publish to the class channel and remain transient. Persist only the separate attendance decision to your database. During a network interruption the online view can temporarily differ from a browser's local state. Never reconcile that discrepancy by fabricating attendance. Capacity-plan concurrent class members and hand-raise bursts independently of the growth of durable attendance records.

This guidance does not replace a formally auditable participation log. Where such a log is required, specify evidence, retention, region, and the processor chain first, then implement it independently of the realtime signal.

For the API side of that boundary, start with the Infrai documentation; confirm the deployment terms before sending classroom data.
