Like many developers and DevOps engineers, I interact with MinIO and AWS S3 daily. Whether managing test artifacts, server backups, configuration files, or document stores, object storage is everywhere.
Yet the tools we use to explore it on the desktop feel stuck in 2010:
- Cyberduck and WinSCP look and feel like legacy FTP clients from the Windows XP era.
- The AWS S3 Web Console constantly logs you out, is slow to render deep prefixes, and requires multiple clicks just to inspect an object.
- The official MinIO
mcCLI is powerful, but explaining it to non-terminal team members (managers, QA, analysts) is always painful.
And the biggest pain point of all: Editing a file in S3.
If you need to tweak a config (.yaml, .json) or modify a Word/Excel document in a bucket, you usually have to:
- Download it to your local disk.
- Find it in your Downloads folder and open it.
- Make changes and save.
- Manually drag it back into the bucket and confirm overwrites.
- Remember to clean up your local temp file.
I decided to solve this and built Syncra. Today, I'm excited to share the official v1.0.0 release with the community!
⚡ What is Syncra?
Syncra is a fast, keyboard-friendly cross-platform desktop GUI for MinIO, AWS S3, Ceph RADOS Gateway, Yandex Object Storage, and any S3-compatible cloud.
Built with Electron 33, React 18, TypeScript, and styled with a sleek dark theme inspired by Plane.so and Linear.
🛠️ Key Architectural Highlights & Features
1. 🔥 Edit-in-Place (Auto-sync Ctrl + S to S3)
This was the primary motivation for building Syncra.
You can double-click any file (Word .docx, Excel .xlsx, CAD, or Photoshop) and it opens in its native local program. Syncra runs a background file watcher (chokidar). The moment you hit Ctrl + S in Word or Excel, Syncra intercepts the save event and instantly uploads the fresh version back to the S3 bucket with a 1-click confirmation toast!
2. 💻 Embedded Monaco Code Editor (VS Code Engine)
Why open an external IDE just to fix a single port in a docker-compose.yml or a flag in settings.json?
Syncra has Microsoft Monaco Editor built right in. You get full syntax highlighting (Python, SQL, JSON, YAML, Shell), line numbers, and a minimap directly inside the cloud bucket.
3. 🚀 High-Performance Transfer Queue
Whether uploading 5 large database dumps or batch-syncing 5,000 image assets, the background Transfer Queue manages multi-threaded streams with real-time speed meters, progress bars, and automatic retry on connection drops.
4. ⚡ Instant Quick Look (Spacebar Preview)
Hit Space to inspect files instantly without downloading them:
- Built-in multi-page PDF reader with zoom and print.
- High-res image gallery lightbox with pan/zoom.
- HTML5 video/audio player.
5. 🛡️ Local-First Security & Zero Telemetry
- All your S3 credentials (
Access Key,Secret Key, endpoints) are encrypted locally using the OS-level credential store. - Credentials and bucket payloads never pass through third-party servers. Syncra communicates directly with your configured S3 endpoint.
