Burnout Recovery Is Not a Vacation
When I finally hit full clinical burnout in 2023, my first instinct was to do what every tired tech worker does: I booked a 10-day luxury trip to an isolated beach in Portugal. I envisioned myself sipping espresso, walking along cliffs, reading philosophy, and returning to my desk fully cured, energized, and ready to dominate.
The reality was a disaster.
By day three of the vacation, without the frantic dopamine hits of Slack pings and production deadlines to numb my nervous system, a tidal wave of profound exhaustion, depression, and somatic panic hit me. I spent four days staring at the hotel ceiling, paralyzed by guilt over not "enjoying paradise."
When I returned to my engineering job the following Monday, all the symptoms—the brain fog, the crushing cynicism, the chest tightness—returned within 15 minutes of opening my laptop.
That was the day I learned a brutal truth: A vacation is a temporary pause on stressors; recovery is a systemic rewiring of your nervous system and work identity.
To guide professionals navigating the complex journey back from collapse, I developed the Burnout Recovery Radar—a free interactive assessment tracking recovery progress across five stages: Nervous System De-escalation, Cognitive Rehabilitation, Boundary Re-anchoring, Identity Decoupling, and Sustainable Pacing. (Note: Our suite also offers comprehensive diagnostics at Burnout Prevention Radar).
