Developer health - taking care of yourself as you code

I've recently contracted tendonitis in both of my hands, it's nothing major and can be treated of course, but it made me realize how I have been pa...

I noticed some pain in my right wrist after my workdays as well. I was only using my MacBook’s Trackpad. I tried a cheap ergonomic mouse when someone told me about it and it was incredibly and instantly better. I just can’t live without it now.

Thanks for all those good advices and take care!

Another aspect is food and meal times. So many companies have this bad culture of having meetings back to back right through lunch time. Developers should pay attention to their meal times and have meals at regular times every day. Many dont realize that irregular meal times lead to acidity, and many more complications as the body ages.

Great article. I've had problems in the past (wrist and back) and it took a long time to get rid of the pain (which always seems to be lurking nearby if I let my guard down).

Be careful with that little mouse wheel used for scrolling. I find that using it too much triggers my wrist pain, so that movement is likely damaging in the long run.

May I suggest a vertical mouse such as the Evoluent Vertical Mouse 4? I got one as part of the recommendations of an ergonomic assessment at work and, even though it took a few days to get used to it, I've never looked back and find it hard to use a normal or even other ergonomic mouse after that. It was instrumental in getting rid of my wrist pain.

Great tips. Will definitely be doing those hand exercises. I bought an ergonomic mice (MX Vertical) and a split ergonomic keyboard (R-Go Split) a few weeks ago. They've made wonders, my wrists felt better only after a few days. I can very much recommend getting a split keyboard, takes a few days getting used to though.

Back posture is super important, I had a spine surgery due to lumbar hernia developed by bad posture + overweight, so better keep your back straight, do some periodic walking and stretching at the office and try some better diet habits.

Great advice! I use a soft wrist pillow and recently spilled coffee on it, so I hand washed it and set it out on the window sill to dry. Then I forgot about it for about 5 weeks. I really noticed a difference! My wrist was not happy without it.

And don't forget to blink the eyes :). My eyes can get red and dry if I don't remember to do that periodically.

Great article! I've found myself fixing my posture while reading it. The mouse is kinda weird, but I think I need one. Thanks for all these advices!

And the biggest mistake you can make is resting your wrist on the edge of the desk. This can cause pain throughout the entire arm, all the way to the shoulder. You won't know what's hurting you

All good advice, one thing I would add is learn to touch type.

It's better for typing on an ergonomic keyboard and also helps your eyes as you are not constantly shifting focus.
