Silicone Riding Breeches: Knee vs Full Seat — Which Do You Need?

When you walk into a tack shop looking for riding breeches, the silicone question always comes up: knee patch or full seat? The answer depends entirely on how and what you ride.

What does silicone grip actually do?

Silicone panels add friction between your leg and the saddle. This helps you maintain position without gripping — which is actually the goal in good equitation. Less gripping = more relaxed leg = better communication with the horse.

Knee patch breeches

Silicone only on the inner knee area.

Best for:

  • Jumping and cross-country
  • Trail/endurance riding
  • Everyday lessons for beginners

Why: Jumping requires more freedom of movement through the hip and thigh. Full seat grip can feel restrictive when you need to fold forward or gallop.

Full seat breeches

Silicone runs from seat through inner thigh to knee.

Best for:

  • Dressage (all levels)
  • Western riding
  • Riders working on seat stability

Why: Dressage is about subtle weight aids and deep seat contact. Full seat grip gives you maximum adhesion to the saddle and amplifies the effectiveness of your weight transitions.

The fabric matters too

Fabric Season Feel
Lightweight microfiber Summer Cool, breathable
Techno stretch Year-round Most popular, durable
Thermal/fleece-lined Winter Warm but bulky

Our recommendation

If you're starting out or do mixed disciplines: knee patch. More versatile, works in most lessons.

If you're focused on dressage or want to improve your sitting trot: full seat.
