You prove yourself when times are tough, and you'll only suffer permanent reputational damage if you try to hide the error, blame-shift or leave the mess for others to clean up.
A strong developer is worth his weight in gold when he/she can own up to errors, positively contribute to the solution and then take real steps to prevent a repeat.
