A lot of industrial facilities have more sensor data than they know what to do with.
Not because they planned it that way. It happened gradually.
A monitoring system here, a condition monitoring upgrade there,
a new piece of equipment that came with its own data logger.
Over time the data streams multiplied and the infrastructure to make sense of them
did not keep pace.
The result is a situation that is more common than people admit.
Data is being collected. Storage is filling up somewhere.
And a meaningful percentage of it has never been looked at by anyone.
How this happens
The deployment of sensors and the deployment of analytics
are usually treated as separate projects on separate timelines.
Sensors go in first because they are the tangible thing
hardware you can point to, a system you can demonstrate working.
The analytics layer comes later, after budget approval,
after the IT team finishes the other priorities,
after someone figures out which platform to standardize on.
Later has a way of not arriving.
Meanwhile the sensors keep running, the data keeps accumulating,
and the maintenance team keeps operating the way they always have
because nothing in their workflow actually connects to the data being collected.
The gap between data and decision
Raw sensor data does not make decisions easier by itself.
It makes decisions easier when it has been processed into something meaningful,
delivered to the right person, at the right time, in a format they can act on.
That chain from physical measurement to actionable information has several places where it commonly breaks down.
Processing is one. Raw acoustic waveforms need to be analyzed
before they mean anything. If the processing layer is not set up correctly,
you get numbers that require an expert to interpret
rather than alerts that a maintenance technician can respond to directly.
Delivery is another. A dashboard that nobody checks
is functionally identical to no dashboard at all.
Data needs to reach the people who make decisions through channels they actually use.
Thresholds are a third. If everything triggers an alert,
nothing feels urgent and alerts start getting ignored.
Calibrating what actually warrants attention versus what is normal variation
takes time and domain knowledge that is often underestimated.

The question worth asking
