You've probably heard "gamma squeeze" blamed for a stock going vertical. It's a real, mechanical phenomenon — not a meme — and understanding it reveals a lot about how dealer hedging can amplify a move. Here's how it works.
The setup
A gamma squeeze starts with heavy call buying. Dealers who sell those calls are now short gamma, and to stay hedged they must buy the underlying as price rises — this is the delta hedging process (see Delta Hedging Explained for the step-by-step mechanics). That buying pushes price higher — which forces them to buy even more to stay hedged. The hedging feeds the move, the move forces more hedging, and a feedback loop forms. Why it accelerates
The key is that dealers here are short gamma — the negative-gamma regime where hedging flows with price instead of against it. In that regime, moves self-reinforce rather than self-correct. It's the violent cousin of a negative-GEX day. A small catalyst can snowball into a vertical move because every uptick mechanically creates more buying. What delta hedging has to do with it
A gamma squeeze is really just delta hedging taken to its extreme. Under normal conditions, a dealer who sold calls delta hedges by buying a modest number of shares and rebalancing gradually as price moves. That's routine and orderly. A gamma squeeze turns it violent: call buying is so concentrated, and the resulting short gamma so deep, that the rate at which dealers need to buy shares to stay hedged overwhelms the available liquidity. Each purchase pushes price higher; each tick higher increases delta on the remaining short calls; each delta increase demands more buying. The hedging mechanic that normally stabilizes a market becomes the engine of a runaway move because the scale of the short gamma position is too large for the underlying's liquidity to absorb quietly. Understanding that the squeeze is a hedging phenomenon — not a sentiment phenomenon — is what tells you when the move is likely to exhaust: once the calls go deep in-the-money and delta approaches 1.0, the incremental hedging demand disappears, and the mechanical fuel burns off.
Squeeze vs. short squeeze
A short squeeze is driven by short sellers covering. A gamma squeeze is driven by dealers hedging options. They often happen together — call buying plus short covering — which is why the biggest melt-ups tend to combine both forces. The gamma squeeze is the mechanical amplifier; the short squeeze is the directional fuel.
Real-world examples
GameStop, January 2021. The most famous gamma squeeze in recent history. Retail traders on Reddit piled into GME calls, which forced dealers — now massively short gamma — to buy shares as the stock rallied. That mechanical buying pushed GME higher, which triggered more call buying, which forced more hedging. The stock rose from roughly $20 to nearly $500 in two weeks. Short sellers covering their positions (a classic short squeeze) ran alongside the gamma squeeze, creating a double feedback loop that overwhelmed the entire market structure.
Broader market squeezes. Gamma squeezes don't require a meme stock. They happen in SPX itself when heavy call positioning meets a catalyst. A strong jobs number or a Fed surprise can push the index through a level where call gamma is concentrated — say, past the call wall at 5,550 — and the mechanical hedging from dealers who sold those calls pushes SPX further than the news alone would justify. The move often exhausts abruptly once the gamma burns off (the calls go deep in-the-money and delta approaches 1.0, so incremental buying stops), leaving a spike-and-fade pattern on the chart. Recognizing when a move is being amplified by gamma — versus driven by genuine reassessment of value — tells you when to ride and when to expect the reversal.
How to spot the conditions
Gamma squeezes need three ingredients: heavy call positioning, a short-gamma dealer regime, and a catalyst. You can see the first two in the positioning data: concentrated call gamma (a large call wall) and price below or breaking through the gamma flip. When those conditions are present and a catalyst arrives — earnings, macro data, a short-squeeze trigger — the feedback loop has fuel. Without the positioning setup, the same catalyst produces a normal move, not a squeeze. That distinction is the entire value of reading positioning before trading the headline.
