Dubai Municipality has started running a LiDAR robot through the final survey step that a completed home needs before handover can close. That step used to mean a crew with tripods walking every plot. The robot instead captures precise coordinates, panoramic images, video and 3D point clouds on its own, with a staff member supervising rather than measuring.
The numbers from the first deployment
The robot's first assignment was final surveys at the Wadi Al Amardi housing project. The municipality's published figures: 472 days of combined customer waiting time removed, operating costs down 90 per cent, and the equivalent of 24 days of fieldwork plus 40 hours of office processing saved. Read the 472 days carefully: it is a cumulative total across everyone waiting on a certificate at that one project, not a per-home number, so it says more about queue length than about any single survey's duration.
What the dataset itself looks like
The more interesting shift for anyone working with this kind of data is the output format. Municipality officials describe survey deliverables moving from flat 2D drawings to 3D models, reusable by engineers and planners on later projects. Each pass also updates Dubai's official spatial database, the same layer of record behind planning decisions and the parcel geometry that public tools, including Doment's own map, draw on. The municipality says it plans to extend the robot to more residential communities, which would mean a growing share of that database being captured this way by default.
