Alibaba's RynnBrain: Open-Source Robotics AI Goes Live
Alibaba's DAMO Academy released the technical report for RynnBrain today—an embodied foundation model designed to give robots genuine spatial awareness and physical reasoning capabilities.
The model comes in three flavors: dense variants at 2B and 8B parameters, plus a 30B mixture-of-experts model (30B-A3B). There's also three post-trained specializations: RynnBrain-Plan for task planning, RynnBrain-Nav for vision-language navigation, and RynnBrain-CoP for chain-of-point reasoning.
What makes this interesting for developers:
Time and space awareness. Unlike models that simply react to immediate inputs, RynnBrain tracks when and where events occurred. A robot can remember picking up the milk, know it's now in the basket, and continue multi-step tasks coherently.
Interleaved physical reasoning. The model alternates between textual and spatial grounding—reasoning that stays anchored in physical reality rather than hallucinating geometric relationships.
Open weights. Everything's on HuggingFace and ModelScope. You can spin up RynnBrain-8B with just transformers==4.57.1 and start experimenting.
This puts Alibaba in direct competition with Nvidia's robotics play and Google's embodied AI efforts. For teams building robotics applications, it's worth grabbing the cookbooks and testing against your use cases.
Anthropic's Super Bowl Counter-Punch: 11% User Boost, Zero Ad Spend
While OpenAI dropped an estimated $8-10 million on a Super Bowl commercial, Anthropic ran a digital campaign mocking the whole exercise—and it worked.
Claude saw an 11% user surge in the days following Super Bowl LIX, according to Slashdot. The campaign's message was deliberately meta: while ChatGPT was busy making flashy ads, Claude was busy being better.
From a strategic perspective, this is textbook asymmetric marketing. OpenAI's ad raised awareness for the entire AI category. Anthropic rode that wave with pointed counterprogramming at a fraction of the cost. On a cost-per-acquisition basis, Anthropic almost certainly came out way ahead.
The rivalry between these two companies has always been personal—Anthropic was founded by former OpenAI researchers who left over safety disagreements. That philosophical split (move fast vs. move carefully) showed up clearly in how each company chose to market.
Paul Smith, Anthropic's chief commercial officer, noted during a recent partnership signing that the company prioritizes revenue growth over flashy headlines. Meanwhile, OpenAI has started testing ads in free ChatGPT—a move that prompted at least one safety researcher to resign.
The AI Safety Exodus: Researchers Are Leaving
This week brought a troubling pattern: AI safety researchers are walking away from the labs they're supposed to be keeping honest.
Mrinank Sharma resigned from Anthropic on February 9th, posting that he had "repeatedly seen how hard it is to truly let our values govern our actions." His resignation letter warned that "the world is in peril" and that humanity's wisdom must grow alongside its technological capabilities.
Zoe Hitzig left OpenAI over its decision to test ads in ChatGPT. In a New York Times essay, she wrote: "People tell chatbots about their medical fears, their relationship problems, their beliefs about God and the afterlife. Advertising built on that archive creates a potential for manipulating users in ways we don't have the tools to understand, let alone prevent."
xAI saw departures of two cofounders and five staff members last week. While the reasons weren't disclosed publicly, it follows uproar over Grok generating sexualized images without consent and the EU launching an investigation into the platform.
Yoshua Bengio, Turing Award winner and chair of the 2026 International AI Safety Report, told Al Jazeera that unexpected problems have emerged: "One year ago, nobody would have thought that we would see the wave of psychological issues that have come from people interacting with AI systems and becoming emotionally attached."
For developers and product teams: these aren't fringe concerns. When the people hired specifically to ensure AI safety are quitting over safety concerns, it's worth paying attention to what they're saying.
