Disclosure: I work with DashScreen (https://dashscreen.co.uk), a UK shop for portable wireless CarPlay / Android Auto displays. This walkthrough is based on how we set up the unit on older cars and vans.
Why skip a stereo swap?
On leased cars, older vans, or radios that still work fine, replacing the head unit is expensive and sometimes not allowed. A portable touchscreen that talks wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto keeps the factory stereo and still gives you maps, calls, and media on a dedicated screen.
What you need
- A portable display that supports wireless CarPlay and Android Auto
- 12V power (cigarette lighter is enough for most setups)
- A phone with CarPlay or Android Auto enabled
- Optional: a reverse camera lead if your unit has an input
Setup steps that usually work
- Mount the screen where it does not block airbags or the driver's view.
- Power it on and complete the first-run language / region screens.
- On iPhone: Settings → General → CarPlay → Available Cars, then pair when the screen appears.
- On Android: enable Android Auto wireless (or follow the on-screen QR / Bluetooth prompt).
- Confirm maps and phone audio route to the portable screen, not only the phone speaker.
Extra tips for older vehicles
- Keep the factory radio for AM/FM if you still use it; treat the portable unit as the smart layer.
- If you use a dash cam or reverse camera input, run cables along existing trim so nothing hangs near pedals.
- After pairing once, most units reconnect when you start the car and unlock the phone.
Wrap-up
You do not have to gut the dash to get modern phone projection. A portable wireless CarPlay / Android Auto screen is enough for many older UK cars and leased vehicles. More product detail: https://dashscreen.co.uk/detail/dashscreen-portable-wireless-carplay-display/
