Best tool for recording screen as a Gif?

I would like to record my projects as nice gifs. Basically capture 3 seconds of my screen.
Where do I start?
I'm new to the world of Gifs!

edit: I'm using a Mac.

QuickTime has a “Screen recording” functionality (hidden in the File tab). Then you can use an online converter to convert the MOV to GIF… Not ideal and relatively cumbersome, but haven’t found a better workflow so far. If you do please post back! :)

Edit: just found out about Kap. Looks really good AND it has GIF export. Will try it out next time!
