Coinbase enforces MiCA: 14 stablecoins must leave EEA accounts by 30 October 2026 or convert into USDC
The deadline
Coinbase told EEA retail customers that 14 stablecoins must be withdrawn by 30 October 2026: USDT, PAX, PYUSD, GUSD, GYEN, DAI, BUST, UST, RAI, PAXG, MUSD, USD1, USDS and TGBP. Buying, selling and converting them is already restricted.
What happens to balances left behind
On 30 October 2026 remaining balances are converted one time at the market rate into USDC where suitable, or another supported asset where it is not. Assets sent after the deadline are not credited, cannot be moved and are excluded from conversion.
Why now: MiCA and ESMA
The MiCA transitional period for stablecoin issuers ended on 1 July 2026 and was not extended. On 8 October 2026 ESMA told CASPs to stop services in non-compliant ARTs and EMTs across all MiCA services.
The remediation date
ESMA expects legacy exposures remediated as soon as possible and no later than three months after its opinion, that is by 8 January 2027. The Coinbase cut-off lands roughly ten weeks before that outer limit.
IMPACT
Who is affected: EEA retail holders of the 14 tokens, CASPs in the EEA and issuers seeking MiCA authorization. What changes: deposits stop being credited after 30 October 2026 and remaining balances convert once at market rate.
Timelines: transitional period ended 1 July 2026, ESMA opinion 8 October 2026, conversion 30 October 2026, remediation limit 8 January 2027. Risks: late transfers not credited, one single conversion price, and similar holdings on other EEA platforms.
