Parsing Telegram Channels with Python: Telethon Basics Without Getting Banned
Short answer: Telethon plus your own account, read-only calls first, respect FloodWait by sleeping exactly as told, and never parse at bulk speed on day one. Working skeleton and limits below.
Setup in ten minutes
Install Telethon, create API credentials at my.telegram.org (api_id plus api_hash - free, two minutes), sign in with your own number. First rule: parse with an account you can afford to warm, never your personal daily driver. Burns happen to beginners.
The minimal reader
Connect, fetch the last N messages from a public channel, print sender IDs and text. That is the whole core: client.get_messages, iterate, store handle plus timestamp plus text. Everything fancier - keyword filters, media skipping, incremental cursors by message ID - bolts onto this loop later.
Limits that matter
Telegram answers abuse with FloodWaitError carrying a seconds field. Sleep exactly that long, not less. Hitting the same method in a loop without pauses escalates a 30-second wait into an account ban. Practical ceilings for a warmed account: a few hundred read calls per hour, pauses between channels, nothing at night local time.

Verify your setup
Parse one small channel end to end and check three things: sender IDs resolve, timestamps are sane, and re-running with a cursor returns only new messages. Then leave the script idle for an hour and confirm no FloodWait arrived. Only then point it at real targets.
Honest limits
DIY parsing caps out fast: session management, proxy rotation, ban recovery, and storage all become your second job around ten accounts. Libraries give you the protocol; operations remain yours. At that point either budget the ops time honestly or hand the plumbing to a service.
Also: public channels only. Private chats, invite-only groups without consent, and reselling raw bases cross lines that cost more than they earn.
What did your first parser break on - FloodWait, sessions, or storage?
