Why I Built a Modern Spring Initializr Alternative with Visual JPA & Docker

Whenever I start a new Spring Boot project using standard tools like start.spring.io, the workflow usually looks like this:

  1. Select Spring Web, Spring Data JPA, and PostgreSQL.
  2. Download the ZIP.
  3. Open IntelliJ.
  4. Spend the next 2 hours manually creating:
    • Entity classes with JPA annotations (@Id, @GeneratedValue, @Column, @OneToMany)
    • Repository interfaces extending JpaRepository
    • DTO request/response records and MapStruct mappers
    • REST Controllers with Jakarta validation
    • Flyway or Liquibase database migration scripts
    • A docker-compose.yml for PostgreSQL

Standard generators give you an empty Application.java and a raw build file. They give you the foundation, but none of the actual architecture.

That’s why I spent the past few months building SpringForge — an open Spring Initializr Alternative and production-grade Spring Boot Project Generator.
