YC Startup School is underrated tbh - the peer cohort is usually worth more than the content, but most people treat it like a free course and miss that part.
That's a really good point. I think it's easy to focus on the speakers and sessions, but the people you meet can end up being just as valuable.
For anyone who gets accepted, I'd definitely encourage them to make the most of the cohort, ask questions, and get to know other builders instead of only attending the talks.

As for hackathons, I actually think they're a great way to learn, especially for networking and seeing how other people approach building projects. You definitely don't need to have years of experience or a portfolio full of polished projects before joining one.
There are also plenty of beginner-friendly hackathons. In fact, I've featured a few in previous editions, including MLH events. One thing I like about MLH is that they also run Global Hack Weeks on different themes throughout the year, which tend to be a very approachable way to get started.
My only advice would be not to wait until you feel "ready," because most people never feel completely ready. If you go in with the mindset of learning, collaborating, and trying something new, you'll probably get much more out of it than you expect.
And if I come across more beginner-friendly hackathons in future editions, I'll definitely keep sharing them.
