The soham problem

While I was interviewing a 20-something guy from India recently, I realized there was a problem in the tech scene there.

People have been focusing on improving their job application strategies instead of being honest about their qualifications. There are whole websites dedicated to LeetCode. There are whole courses on how to crack YC interviews.

When a default trust society meets a trust-deficit society, you get soham.

The West has glorified young, 20-year-old founders, but I believe this is not true and will never be. For instance, when I was growing up, Ankit Fadia was this young hacking sensation who turned out to a fake tech guru.

If you are hiring in a trust deficit society, it will be a hit (mostly misses).

Things that work well

  • Strong background checks
  • Detect bullshit and act fast
  • Hire a manager who to keep a check on the person.
