Happy International Women's Day!🌟

It’s International Women’s Day y’all!

As we join in celebrating the incredible achievements of women worldwide, we're thrilled to reiterate our unwavering dedication to gender equality and inclusion.

Happy International Women's Day

A miniature history lesson on IWD

Today marks a holiday that began on March 8th, 1857 with the first organized working women’s strike against unfair working conditions and wages in the textile industry in New York City. On March 8th, 1908, we were again reminded of our fight towards gender equity, on a day of protest for women’s suffrage and better pay. We observed our first unofficial Women’s Day in the US in 1909, honored it first in Denmark, Austria, Germany, and Switzerland in 1911, and marked it as a full month in 2011.

Now, “IWD is an official holiday in many countries including Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, China (for women only), Cuba, Georgia, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Madagascar (for women only), Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Nepal (for women only), Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, and Zambia” (Source).

We continue to celebrate this holiday to recognize the achievements for the universal social, political, and economic liberation of women and all peoples affected by gendered oppression. This holiday also marks a continued push for the global liberation of women, one that recognizes that women are still largely affected by the wage gap, access to education, disproportionate rates of violence, and social stigma.

RESPECT FOR WOMEN!

Celebrating IWD here at DEV

Through endeavors like our we_coded campaign, our aim remains steadfast: to nurture a culture in tech where diversity is not just embraced but celebrated, folks feel welcome and included, and where we are empowered to be our best selves. In order to create this environment, we are dependent on lovely people like yourself!

Highlights from the we_coded collection:

In honor of IWD, we wanted to share some inspiring #wecoded stories! Explore some early highlights from this year's campaign and peruse the contributions of past years' celebrations.

#wecoded

we_coded is a celebration of individuals who are underrepresented and otherwise marginalized in software development on the basis of gender: including women, transgender, nonbinary, gender non-conforming, and two spirit people.

That is absolutely incredible! 🤯

How many sheets of paper do you think that is? It would be super cool if they put that code on GitHub, haha.
