How long does it take to build an app? A developer’s breakdown

I work in business development at Miracuves, which sells ready-made white-label apps. I’ve kept the advice below useful whichever route you choose.*

Every founder asks it in the first five minutes: “How long will it take?”

Every developer answers: “It depends.”

True, but not helpful. So let’s break it down the way you’d estimate a sprint.

A custom app is commonly planned in months, because everything is built from scratch.
A ready-made, white-label app can launch in days, because most of the product already exists.
The route you choose matters more than the tech stack.
What actually decides the timeline?

Think of it as a rough guide, not a promise. Six things decide most of it:

Scope: every feature adds design, build and testing time.
Platforms: Android, iOS and a web admin panel each add work.
Integrations: payments, maps, push notifications and login.
Decision delays: slow approvals stretch projects more than code does.
Testing: bugs found late cost the most.
Store review: Apple and Google review your app, and that time sits outside your build time.

The code is rarely the slowest part. Waiting for clarity is.

Why do custom builds take months?

Because everything is new: architecture, design, backend, APIs, mobile apps, admin panel, testing and fixes.

That’s the right call when your product is genuinely unlike anything else.

But is it? Many apps are new ideas built on familiar pieces: a delivery app, a booking app, a marketplace, a chat app. The idea is yours. The core features have often been built before.

Build, buy or start from a base?
Build from scratch when your core product is truly different. Trade-off: the longest timeline.
Use a ready-made white-label app when your model works elsewhere and your edge is your brand or market. Trade-off: less unique at launch.
Start ready-made, then customise when you want real users to guide what you build next. Needs a clear plan for what to change later.

The question worth asking:“What do I need to learn from users first?”
If the answer is “whether people want this”, a faster route usually makes sense.

Where Miracuves fits

With Miracuves, ready-made platforms launch under your own brand in 6 working days, counted once your branding, hosting and accounts are ready. App-store review is separate. Custom work is typically 2 to 8 weeks.
What matters to developers:

Source code ownership: the complete source code is transferred to you in writing at handover.
100% white-label: your name, logo, colours and domain across every screen, with no “powered by” badges.
You can still extend it: launch first, then customise with your own team.
FAQ
How long does it take to build a simple app?
Commonly a few months from scratch. On a ready-made base it can be days. Scope sets the real number.

Why do projects run late?
Usually changing requirements, slow approvals and late testing.

Is a white-label app just a template?
No. It’s a working product you rebrand and own.

Do I own the source code?
With Miracuves, yes, in writing at handover.

Takeaway
Time-to-launch isn’t a fixed number. It’s a choice about what you’d rather build and what you’d rather learn.
