Creating An App To Help Kids With Washing Their Hands Properly

Both the World Health Organisation (WHO), and the governments of countries affected by #corona indicated the importance of washing hands.

Washing your hands helps to slow down the spreading of the virus by reducing the risk of getting infected and infecting others with the Coronavirus.

That’s why I’m working on an app that helps people to properly wash their hands.

You can go to www.washem.app for more information and/or subscribe to the updates to get informed when it is available

Kids Be Kids

Even during these times, kids — I have seven-year-old twins; a boy and a girl) and a toddler that’s around 1,5 years old — are just kids.

They love to play outside, run around and they still don’t like chores and doing things that keep them from their daily portion of fun.

Let’s put our hands together (and wash them properly!) so we can do our part in the battle against Corona.

From Virus To Idea

As I learned about the Corona virus and the importance of washing your hands properly during these times, I remember thinking: How can I help my kids to wash their properly and long enough?.

As I am a 16+ year developer I got the idea for creating an app that can be used during the handwashing process to guide kids (and adults) through the process so they clean them properly, thus helping the battle against Corona.

Adults Need A Good Washing, Too

As I was watching the information provided by the WHO, I did see a good explanation on how to wash your hands properly so you clean all angles and spots on your hands.
I had seen the procedure before — mostly in a medical setting — but somehow never realized why and how all steps were performed correctly.

So, Adults will benefit from using the app too. Let’s put our hands together (and wash them properly!) so we can do our part in the battle against Corona.

Where I’m At

At the moment of writing this post, I’m about twelve hours in. During those hours, I have:

  • Created the basic functionality (MVP) of the app, which I titled *Washem *(as in: "Wash them", which refers to your hands 😊)

  • I’m using Xamarin to build a cross-platform mobile app and want to release both an iOS and Android version*.

  • Registered www.washem.app

  • Created a landing page using the fast website builder Carrd.co (note: this is a referral link)

  • Reactivated my Apple Developer account

  • Started polishing the content and working on visuals like the app icon, splash screen, supporting information, links, etc.

*: although the iOS app will probably be released first, Android will follow shortly)

The app will be available in English and Dutch (my mother language) and follows instructions given by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the instance that informs The Netherlands about health issues, the RIVM.

*PLEASE NOTE THAT I’M NOT AFFILIATED OR PARTNERED WITH THE WHO AND RIVM. *

I’m just using the information they provide — which is publicly available — to create something that helps people to wash their hands properly.

You can go to www.washem.app for more information and/or subscribe to the updates to get informed when it is available

I’ll keep you posted on the progress and what it looks like, soon!

Take care, keep distance, and keep clean 🙌🏻
